Clicking sound from new Maxtor HD

I just installed a new Maxtor 200GB Ultra ATA/133 hard drive on my ASUS K8V SE deluxe motherboard and now I can hear a clicking sound at times. Does this mean that it could be a faulty hard drive? I don't hear the sound all the time but only at times especially if I'm uploading something.

Also may this could be related. I posted on this earlier (post titled "raid array question"). I had to install this drive using the Promise PDC20378 RAID controller set to act as a third IDE controller. Could this contribute to the hard drive making this sound. please help. thanks
 
I'm no expert but hard drives should never click, Maxtor has been under fire for a little while now for a slew of defective drives, though I'm not entirely certain you're drive is problematic it would appear so. Now you should have a warrenty of some sort you you can either contact the reseller, or Maxtor and either see what they think (after some more knowledgable members respond here), and/or possible return the drive. In the event you get a new one I'd suggest going with either Western Digital or Seagate, particularly the Barracuda line.
 
Clicking hard drives are never a good sign. Backup any important data pronto, and then get ahold of Maxtor for an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization). You may need to run some diagnostic test to verify this, and it may require the hard drive to be on a native ATA controller (ie the ones from the motherboard chipset, not 3rd party controllers) for the software to detect the drive.
 
Agreed, clicking hard drives are those which are dying, badly. Back up what data you can before it completely craps out on you.
 
Sadly, i can vouch for this... My Maxtor 80GB hd has just died :crying: [after its been clicking for 2 weeks]

Saying that, it is 3 years old and has been formatted every 1/3 months [so its had some decent use!]

It was my first hard drive :crying:
