computer isnt deteting ethernet cable

I have a cable modem along with the high speed internet. and when i went to install the modem the computer wouldnt detect the ethernet cord but when i used the usb cord it worked fine. now that i bought a router i need to get the ethernet connection to work but i dont know how.
 
I had exactly that same problem with my router/ethernet cable.

My problem was that in Device Manager (My Computer>>Properties>>Hardware>>Device Manager), that the ehternet card had been disabled.

See if that is the case. If its not, try updating to the latest drivers.
 
try the drivers first, if this does not work make sure have the right ethernet cable (if it came withe you modem it should be fine) if not make sure if straight cable and not crossover (cat5e). hope this helps Dave :good:
