Config.sys and Autoexec.bat MISSING!!!

Um... I am missing both Config.sys and Autoexec.bat, they are not there, when I tried to edit them via sysedit and run>config.sys or run>autoexec.bat what shows up is..... a blank notepad!!! :EEK:

To the furthest of my computer knowledge(Which is not very large :Confused: ) I believe that these files, especially Config.sys are the most important files in the entire computer, I also believe that the boot is run off of Config.sys and Autoexec.bat. Of course I am probably wrong, however I will leave my computer running and start backing up files preparing for the worst. :Frown:

And if this is not some system threatening problem then I also need help with the original problem (The reason I tried editing config.sys) is because NTVDM CPU is not allowing my MSDOS prompt to work[plus there is an error message I will have to post later (I know you can always bypass the prompt by editing the paths but I would still like to have it working anyways)] and because I am out of 'conventional' memory, (who the heck thought up of that, right after you install your drivers and programs you realise that, that one DOS program you needed to install can't because it needs some of the memory you !Just finished filling up! : Doh: )

I didn't add that, whoops I am running 2000 on an old Dell that originaly came with 95(I know I need a new one just be quiet :D ) I don't think any of my drivers or cards are important in this problem.
 
Windows 2000 is a Windows NT based operating system, which has the autoexec.bat and config.sys files, but it doesn't require them to be used. They are there optionally incase you want to have something executed (such as a driver) before the main O/S loads.

MS-DOS and similar-era O/S's did require the autoexec and config files, and I agree with you that 640kb of conventional memory is stupid (I've spent hours trying to get drivers loaded into the extended and upper memory area recently, it was a right pain in the arse).

Just a side note: Windows 2000 isn't as secure as XP, so I wouldn't recommend it for surfing the internet. I especially would avoid online banking and purchasing items online where your credit card details must be entered.

i know pretty much about Win2k, but, i do have a bl00dy stupid memory & i did like & understand DOS, in DOS you could free some conventional memory by moving some drivers & stuff to the upper memory area (extended & expanded),
you move them in DOSby typing

don't use capitol letters in any smilies you add
 
I found that memmaker wasn't the most effective method, and some of the stuff I had to do by hand. But I agree with you about liking DOS, there's much less to go wrong! And if it crashed, Ctrl-Alt-Delete just rebooted it!

presumably you are referring to 3rd party utils like QEMM (Quarterdeck Enhanced Memory Management) then i agree, but, memmaker comes with DOS, i miss DOS:eek: & being able to fix stuff easily
