First I have a question? Is it normal for a CPU to run at 100%. I ask this because when I run some applications on my PC like burning DVDs the computer freezes. I have been trying to fix this problem by turning off all my virus scan and automatic updates. But this did not fix the problem. So I tried opening the task manager Wile runing the application that way see the CPU usage. That is when I noted that every time I run the application the CPU% get at 100 and thats when it freezes and some times the computer shuts down. This used to happend while playing DVD's on the windows madie player and when I capture video from my sony DV camcorder.
 
It would depend really, video capture can use 100% but when buring CD/DVD's it should'nt really.

post the process file name, which is using 100% process time.
 
How can I find the file process name. I opend the task manager windows and look in processes. If this is right I see that system Idle process system is at 98 to 99 is this what you mein and thank you for your respond


I biuld this PC my self Last year with out no kind of knowledge of how to build one. This problem was happenig then but not that often whe I used to run cakewalk Home studio but now that I am ripping dvds thee problem is worst. Is it mabe I did something wron when I biuld my PC. This is becoming very annoing do I need another PC. It seems that this happend when I run some programs. When I am serfin the net the PC never freezes :confused:
 
Well if System Idle is at 99 percent or so, that means that 99% of your CPU isn't doing anything, which is fine.

In order to find the process that uses 100%, firstly open up that DVD program and then burn the cd. Open up task manager and it'll probably say "Roxio DVD 100%" or something.
 
I had that for a while, the CPU runs at a constant 100% and really slows the computer down. It happened with me when I opened a certain folder. I looked at processes and it said that system idle was using all the CPU. I think it' a virus in the program, try installing it again. if that fails try kicking the computer, that often helps.
 
Lol. If you don't have an anti-virus program that's up to date, you need that first off. I know TrendMicro has a freebie on-line virus scanner to check out, but AVG offers a totally free one to install. Secondly, spyware can also do some of this fun stuff, so get Spybot to clean house for you---another free program.
 
He's got it listed on the My Computer drop-down menu beside his posts. 3.06 P4 and 1GB of RAM...that should make for a pretty robust video-editing system. I believe the 3.06 has HyperThreading (you'll see two graphs in Task Manager), so that's a bonus.

The other thing I can think of is that the CPU might be overheating. The P4 should throttle it's speed back if it gets to hot, but if that's borked for some reason, that might be a good reason.

It could also be the power supply going out as well, but I don't know what he has to give a reasonable assessment if it's a problem or not.
 
there might be heavy applications running in the background, thanks big b i know, im an idiot lol shud have seen the drop down. but wow thats weird for a processor like that to be continually using 100% of its performance. yea big b has another point, check if the fans working good or clear sum dust or possibly check the cpu temperature in bios and if its way too high then get a new fan, or outfit your case with some. Im stil confused that a systems working like that with a gig of ram and a good cpu. If you built a computer without much knowledge of how to, u might want to try to take it apart and put it back together, maybe there might be a faulty connection.
