CPU upgraded and now windows will not start

i recently upgraded my CPU from a 2.66 P4 to a 3.2 P4. now when i start my computer i get to the windows boot select screen and when i chose any of the options it does not start but just freezes. i have tried the safe modes, normal , last known good configuration . nothing seems to work
any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
I think you will need to reinstall Windows. But I've also heard from someone if the wrong FSB or voltage is used, it can make XP fail to boot.
 
i used the default FSB and voltages
I will mostlikely attempt to reinstall even though i hate doing it
 
Am I correct in assuming your new processor is hyperthreaded? If I assume correct then the reason your computer won't boot is because you effectively switched from a single CPU to a dual CPU setup. Your Windows installation is using the single HAL kernel, NTOSKRNL.exe, which is incompatible with dual CPUs.

Using the recovery console from the Windows XP CD-ROM, copy NTKRNLMP.EXE from the /i386 directory to your /windows/system32 folder. Then delete /windows/system32/ntoskrnl.exe.

If that sounds like too much hassle, just reinstall Windows :D
 
yes it is a hyper threading chip. and i have tried to reinstall
and when i try it gets to the point where it says starting windows at the bottom left corner of the blue screen and then it does not get past that everything is set to default in the bios
i m wondering what i should do now
i have Windows Xp pro it is an older copy before SP1
 
there in lies the problem my computer is the only one with that software and burning drives

i have been writing these questions on a computer at work
i belive tonight i will put the 2.66 back in and try that

i have an asrock motherboard at the time i thought it was a good purchase but now after having it for two years i am not so sure.
 
You will need to reinstall Windows. If you make any major change to the PC i.e new CPU, mobo, then Windows needs to be reinstalled. I think this will only work if you have the OEM version of Windows but not sure.

yes i realize that but the thing is that the windows disk i have does not want to load up it just stops once it says loading windows in the bottom left corner

i have tried the disk in the computer here at work and it loads up the recovery and install screens fine but not on the one with the new processor
 
You may have created another problem by reinstalling Windows. Are you using SATA hard drives? You may need to press F6 in the Windows set up and load the correct drivers before setup continues.

i have sata drives but not for the windows installation for that i have an IDE
i have switched ide cables switched power plugs
i have removed all my pci devices and unpluged my sata drives

tonight i will go back to my old cpu and see if it works or not
 
well thanks for all the advice

i put the old 2.66 back in and everything starts up and works fine

I think i will return the new one and come up with a diffrent plan

I think i will just save up for a core 2 set up
 
I have supper dupper good advice is your mobo HT compadible ,some arent ,are you sure you motherboard can go to 3.2ghz ?
