Crashing

Usually while playing an intense graphics game, my computer will make a click sound and just shut off to a black screen (monitor and computer lights still on but black screen). I usually get this problem about once a night. After reading for months now, over time I have replaced the graphics card to an Nvidia geforce 6800 GS from an fx 5200. I also keep my computer case open with a HOUSEFAN blowing inside (hahaha), so I am PRETTY sure there is no overheating problem like people suggest a lot, and today, I bought a whole new power supply, upgrading from a 250W to a 400W. I managed to go all evening with no crashes and I thought I fixed it, but just a minute ago, while having WoW minimized and playing music, I got the same old click n' crash to a black screen.

Basically everything has been replaced since I got this computer about 3 years ago aside from the HDD (120 gb) and processor (Athlon xp 2600+) and the motherboard (which I don't know a lot about).

If anyone has any ideas as to what's causing this, help please! I am posting this before I go to sleep, and I'll be back to check tomorrow. ;)

Dynex. I got it at Bestbuy for around $90 but it came with a $20 rebate.

Right now I can't find anything but the next time it crashes I will post the error.

Ok. I went all day and finally it crashed one time, and the first red X in the event manager was this:

I really doubt that being the culprit, but it was on the log at the exact time of the crash...
 
Ok will do. My computer came with a 30 day trial of Norton which has been expired now for... 2 years or something.. (haha). I can exit that and see how things go.

Do you have any active and updated anti virus or firewall software installed?

Event 1802 means out of memory, which in itself is quite random. But it seems that it could be linked with your installation of Norton :-

WMI - wmi and the norton antivirus 2005

Try completely uninstalling Norton and see how you go.

Thanks.. I will try that. I discovered that just disabling Norton didn't work.. so I will uninstall it.
 
Bad news.. I crashed just now and at the exact time of the crash, I got that same Error Event.. and Norton is fully deleted from my system..
 
Have you got any other firewall or anti virus software installed that is active and up to date?
 
See, the problem with Norton software is it's so bloated that it's difficult to completey remove.

What I suggest you do is to download and run CCleaner. It's a free registry cleaner that will remove all those nasty references to Norton's software.

Once thats done, try restarting the 'Security Centre' service. Now I am not running Windows so this is from memory! Click 'Start', choose 'Run' and type 'services.msc'.
Look for 'Security Centre' and disable it. Then restart it again.

You may want to check out Avast Antivirus and Sunbelt Kerio Firewall as they work flawlessly.

I have PC-Cillin Internet Security 2006 by Trend Micro.. which I just got because I disabled Windows Firewall. I suspected it to be a possible reason for the crashes.

Thank you... I already had Ccleaner but I ran it and let it do what you said. I found Security Centre and stopped it, then disabled, then started/enabled it again. We will see how things go so far now.
 
Argh.. crashed again.. after I already did all that. Anyone have any suggestions? :(

They happen about once per day still.

It's possible that the crashes are caused by a virus. Have you performed a full scan with your anti virus software? Maybe i'm reading your posts incorrectly but I think you've only just installed the anti virus and firewall software. It makes me suspect something nasty could be lurking on your machine somewhere.

Yeah, my computer is pretty clean of viruses. I just had a problem last month with a nasty type of spyware. I was helped by a tech on a spyware website and in the process he had me run about 10 million different virus/spyare/registry scanners which cleaned my computer of about everything possible.

Ok, I've been thinking. Would it be any help if I were to try replacing the processor with a Pentium 4 1.8ghz from another computer I have here just to see if that helps?

My reason for thinking this is because after searching google for a while today for my problem, I noticed a lot of the people who had my problem were using Althlons. Like, 80% of them it seemed.

I highly doubt its the processor causing the problems (although anything is possible), unless your system is overclocked to within an inch of its life. If you did replace the CPU you would also need to replace the motherboard and possibly the RAM.

It might be worth doing a full format and reinstall before splashing out on new hardware that is potentially uneccesary. Its a pain but if you cant track down any software conflicts it might be worth a try. Just make sure you have all the drivers you need before you clean the HDD. Also install the most recent version of your firewall and anti virus bofore you connect to the net if you do format the HDD.

I've never messed with processors and I didn't know you had do all that. I just figured I could just swap them and it would be fine. It's about time for a reformat.. and it won't be that bad because I saved most of my stuff such as mp3's to about 12 disks from the last time that I reformatted.
