It sounds as if you have some kind of infection or corruption that is latched onto or is the explorer.exe

I have experienced this before, i would recommend a system restore. Or even run a few scans in safemode.

All else fails try creating a new user account.

I had a similar problem, which was after a night of hitting a bunch of Runner blogs, so I figured it was a virus.

I had Norton at the time, and ran a scan but it found nothing. I downloaded several free trials of AV, but the only one that found anything was cyberdefender, and it found 2 viruses on my computer.

It was about $40 to get the full version, which is about what it costs for others, and it came with a money back guar so I figured why not?

Anyway, it fixed some of the issues but not the ctrl alt del problem.

It comes with a 24 x 7 call center, which I called and they were really helpful and told me that since I installed the software after I got the virus that they would need to fixed by remote access.

5 minutes later it was done and the system was clean and on reboot, the ctrl alt del problem was gone.

Since then I have gotten a pop-up every now and then saying something is attacking my computer, and I click the button and it is blocked. Easy to use and I am happy with it.

It depends what you mean by the term 'fresh' if you did a low level wipe on the drive, then formatted it and then installed windows - it would kinda rule out the possibility of it being an infection (straight away) But, this could be down to other reasons... Was it a valid MS disc you used to install? If it was a copy chances are some of the files within windows are corrupt or something?

I would look into your startup programs to identify if any of them are overruling explorer...

Start > run > msconfig

Then go to the startup tab and have a look for any suspicious files that are loading on bootup.

You can also try running Malwarebytes. We use it at the hospital I work at and it finds and removes lots of things that other spyware/malware programs dont seem to be able to find or fix.

You could download Cyberdefender's free scanner and check it out. I used it just to check my system until it finally caught something and then I upgraded. Totally worth it.
