Dell CPU Proprietary?

To be completely honest, this question has been bugging me for quite a while since I do have a dell p4 cpu 533mhz just laying in a dead shell. The Computer has been completely dead for quite sometime a simple powersupply problem or a motherboard glitch, however, the annoying part is simply all of the hardware that can be transferred over to a regular motherboard board that would be compatible with the correct specs. So here is the questions are Dell CPU chips proprietary, or are they compatible with other motherboards as well. I know that other devices such as video cards, sound card, ethernet card for the most part can be taken out and applied else where however, I have never taken a CPU out and swapped it from a Dell, and nor have I ever heard of someone else doing it. If someone is able to answer this question it would make my life a little easier.

Simple answer is yes!
If Dell (or any other company for that matter) could pay to get their own versions of P4's or AMD's, they would, but it'd be far too expensive for them to do so!
Word of caution: I think Dell has a habit of swapping pins around on their PSU's and motherboards, so don't use the PSU.
Someone else may clarify this!
 
No the CPUs are the same as all other P4s, just the PSU and maybe some other things like power pin configurations are different. Apart from that, the RAM and CPU will be able to be moved over to a new system.
 
Yup. Dell has a custom-wired PSU, and those tend to be a little pricey. PC Power & Cooling makes Dell-specific power supplies and those should be high-quality. Unfortunately, when you're the Rolls Royce in your market, you can afford to charge a premium price.

I just ripped apart my own dell last week, and the PSU(dell) worked in another tower. You're saying this shouldn't work?
 
Dell has had their power supplies wired differently last I knew. Now, I don't know if they've discontinued this on all or just part of their units, but it is a known thing with Dell. This is the first time I've heard of someone using a Dell PSU in another non-Dell motherboard, so it's news to me.
 
This is a thanks for everyone that shared their input about the propietary, this computer, if the specs on the p4 that I am using are 2.66ghz, 533mhz, that would be a 478 socket type correct?
