dell inspiron cpu and memory upgrade questions

Thanks mate!
So no overheat despite the 10 Watts difference.
So, the bios is 2.6.2? Your 2+2 memory type?

(I am just trying to figure out if the motherboard is a bottleneck.)

Thanks very much for your help. It's really appreciated.

bump... come on anyone?
cube? :p

VioletBlueSkies,

So did you finally upgrade your dell 1501 semptron 3500?I have the same laptop which my folks in India are using. I want get the right cpu/ram and get it done when I go to visit them. I get only one shot at it, so I need to get the right cpu & ram. I am confident on the TL-60 cpu but ram is question.

I am thinking of getting a AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-60 TMDTL60HAX5DC (Tyler).

Question: What ram should I get? (my original 1501 semptron came with 1 gb ram).

signed up just to say THANK YOU for this thread :) ... I landed here thanks to google ... and my mistake while shopping for a used AMD mobile CPU ...

anyways, I accidentally thought any AMD Turion Mobile fitting the socket will run in my mom's Inspiron 1501. wrong. I purchased the $17 chip described as Turion II Mobile M500 2.2GHz, well ... it fit, but laptop couldn't start with it installed. ... then I googled ... and came here :)

Thanks to this thread, I ordered a super cheap $17 (shipped free) AMD Turion 64 X2 2.1GHz TL-62 off ebay and now can't wait to get it!
Hoping this will fit and run! Model number is TMDTL62HAX5DM and according to OEM specs this is what I needed ... and cheap! :)

if anybody in US and likes shopping ebay for old laptop upgrades, here is the listing, the guy incorrectly described it as 1.2GHz, but model number matches TL-62 :)

one more left as today.
my way of saying thanks ;)

Yep, so we can confirm you have an S1 socket. And we can also confirm that you must stay in the TL line for Turion and TK lines for Athlon.

I ran into something interesting. The TL and TK lines are all S1g1 sockets, the g1 indicating Generation 1. The ZM, QL, and RM lines are S1g2 (generation 2). Look at this list of all the Turion and Athlon processors. Notice the S1g1 and S1g2 differences. I read all over other forums (here's one) that the main difference between the two generations is that S1g2 uses different voltages. Also, S1g2 CPU's are backwards compatible with S1g1 sockets. But you can't have it the other way around which is exactly why you can't install any of the ZM, QL, or TK lines. Your sempron is a generation 1.

Now that we've got that out of the way, all of our pendancies are answered here. "Cleverpseudonym" manged to stick a Tl-66 (the next best Turion processor next to the TL-68), and even managed to install 4gb of memory even though dell states that 2gb is the max.
FSB speeds can be confusing and i don't quite understand it myself, but you can read about it here. "Cleverpseudonym" also mentioned that the memory he installed was 800mhz, way above what dell listed as it's maximum.

OK, so i have read all of this and what i am understanding is that because i have the Athlon cpu in mine, the most i can upgrade to is the tk-57? it is a 1.9 ghz dual core. is that right? here is a link of the 57.
