Issue:
Harddrive not being dected

Backstory:
I decided to buy a new case upgrading from a fairly cheap case to a better one. So, I am taking out the parts from my old case and putting them into the new one. Everything is going smoothly and after some time everything has been moved over and everything is properly connected and such.

I boot my PC in its new case for the first time and start up is going smoothly thus far, but then it fails to detect my harddrivess. At this time I have 2 perfectly working (to my knowledge) SATA harddrives. One is a WD Raptor 74GB while the other is a WD Cavalier 320GB. It fails to detect, so, I restart and again it still fails to detect. Note: I have checked every other piece of hardware and everything else is working perfectly fine.

I start switching around my sata cables / power connectors in an effort to fix it, but to no avail. I decided I should try to get at least one working and I can work from there. I disconnected my slave HD (the 320GB WD Cavalier) and worked soley with the Raptor. I then decided to try the straight SATA Power Connector, being unable to find the source of the problem. I boot my computer and hear noises and see smoke coming from my Raptor. One HD is now dead and fried.

So, after this I disconnect and take out the Raptor (obviously severely angered at this point) and try to calmly find a solution with the other. I revert back to my previous power connector and tried switching around SATA cables and using different connectors, but to no avail.

Any and all help is welcome! I have never had to rely on forums for assistance, and it is just a sign of my desperation at this time. PLEASE Help!

Just a thought - and I'm stabbing in the dark a bit! Did you enable the HDDs in BIOS when you swapped everything over to the new case. I recently had the problem of HDDs not being recognized when I put in a new motherboard (although this is not quiet the same thing in your case).

Yeah, I've gone through my BIOS a bunch of times at this point. Restoring defaults, working backwards, redoing settings. Also, I didn't mention this earlier but I am not really concerned so much with the fried HD right now, but with getting the other HD working so I can actually use my PC.

Have you got an old IDE HDD that you could try loading into windows with? At least you would have a running rig. And the only thing you changed out was the psu, you didn't change out the mobo or anything else? You really shouldnt have to worry about changing your settings as long as you only changed the psu.

If the psu is the only thing you changed out and it wont recognise the hdds then you got a bad psu. Maybe it has a defective rail or cable. Unfortunately it took out your raptor.. I feel for you man. That is horrible luck. What type of PSU did you throw in there? Did you buy it from a well known retailer? Or better yet a local shop? I would work my butt off tryin to get that raptor replaced (and PSU.)
