Error Message

I run a second computer that is used by my Son for homework etc, It is a Rather old Packard Bell Imedia.

We have just received the following error message:-

The following file is missing or corrupt ?windows/system/vgaoem.fom

you can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using 'r' at the first screen.

I have attempted to boot from windows XP professional cd and packard bell recovery disk with no luck.

I would be grateful for any help.

You could try booting into safe mode by tapping F8 once a second on bootup and see if that loads, if succesfull you can then search your other computer for the 'vgaoem.fom' file and then transfer back onto your pc. Make sure you have got 'Show hidden files and folders' enabled on My Computer > Tools > Folder Options.

Well, if you're running a packard bell, I'm assuming that it's not running XP (unless you've installed it since you bought it). And if it's not running XP, the XP disk is not going to work for recovery. So basically, what I'm saying is to make sure you're trying to repair the operating system with the same operating system.

Make sure the OS installed on the PC is WinXP Pro, if it is, you should be able to repair it using your WinXP Pro CD. If the OS is Home, you won't be able to repair it using the Pro CD. You can also get that file off of another PC and simply copy it to the \system\ directory. If all else fails, you can always re-install windows keeping your file system the same as long as it is FAT32 or NTFS, and keep all your files.

You could try searching for the file on the net on another computer, saving it to floppy then whilst computer is staring up, F8 into set up and boot from floppy?
i doubt this will help, just an idea.
