ESD wristband grounded where?

OK guys, i'll need someone's experienced input on this one.

After recently (maybe me, maybe not) destroying someone's stick of RAM by ESD, I need to know for sure the exact precautions for using an anti-static wristband.

I wasn't wearing it at the time, i only briefly touched the case and worst of all i was wearing a fleece jacket. Just asking for trouble.

The RAMs destroyed, and so in the future, where exactly do you ground the other end of a wristband. I used to try and stick it into the ground socket on a standard 3pin euro power socket, but it doesn't stay in long. Would attaching it to the case be as effective? How about leaving it plugged in but have the power turned off at the socket, would that ground it aswell?

I don't want to cock anything up in the future by not properly using the wristband.
 
I've always attached mine to the case, don't know if that's the proper place for it but so far no statically damaged components.
 
I attached mine to the toaster. With it plugged in and turned off. (It was the closest thing to my building area at the time)
 
I beleive the best place to clip them to is the PSU if possible.
But anywhere on the case is fine.
 
Central heating radiator earthing point.

I have a grounded (earthed) radiator in the room where my PC is so everytime I service it I do it with one (bear) foot on the point where the earth cable is attached to the radiator.

If I hade a wrist band I would probably attach it to the same point....
 
It's best to stay away from carpet if you can. You should work on your PC in the kitchen..... or bathroom perhaps :P Anywhere where there is no carpet to stand on. Also make sure your shoes have rubber souls *sic :)
