Not sure if this fits here or cooling section anyway having some issues here not sure whats wrong if anything is technically. My computer Gateway 700GR bought from bestbuy nothing fancy specs Gateway 700GR Specs. Desktops Specifications.

About two days ago I decided I wanted to move from XP home to XP Pro for networking/sharing reasons. I didnt move my drives just changed the installation from the default drive 250 the computer was shipped with to another drive thats smaller and shows a faster read/write slightly then the default drive. In doing so my fans are constantly going up and down in speed. I'm not to sure whats wrong but its rather anoying. After I installed XP Pro gateway provides all the drivers for download from their site in which case the newest appears to be a BIOS update and a DVD drive flash update. Their located here Gateway Support Drivers & Downloads

After doing all this the only thing I had installed afterwards was just updates from microsoft and notorn internet security which Ive always used. Now since then my fans fluxuiate so much its anoying :( Shutting down and powering back on with only windows loading nothing else in startup including norton (just idling) it does it still but not as bad. Just normal routine computing or more causes it to flux around. These are some screenshots from speedfan if they help out any..

Three weeks prior to all this I did clean out my system meaning I vacumed up dust and dirt, cleaned out my heatsink and fans. I live in a dusty road so dust is an issue here. Applied new thermal grease and everything was fine, even ran a couple degree's cooler. I can turn off the automatic fan ordeal in the bios but two fans running at full speed is noisy.

It possible the new bios update might be causing this or do I have a processor thats going bad?

Compare Fan speeds to Temperatures, see if the fans start to speed up at a certain temp or if fan speeds and temps are related...

what i'm *guessing* is that when the system heats up, the fans go faster, the system cools down until its X amount under the desired value and then slows the fans down... and then when the temp is X amount over the desired temp it speeds the fans back up (I remember something about this method from tec studies in high school, they related it to a fridge saying that the compressor wouldn't turn on/off/on/off/on/off as the temperature fluctuated by a degree).

Looking at the chart (which covers 25 mins for anyone who didn't notice the start/stop time) it looks like the fans go from min to max as fast as they can

You might want to consider getting a fan controller so you can set the speeds yourself if the speeding up/down it annoying you! I think the general idea behind whats happening is to keep the fans on minimum speeds as much as possible...

Right now just typing this the temp is 131F it hasnt changed while IE is open and me typing but the fan speeds are. The speed differences appears to be about 200 RPMS up or down just idling or viewing/reading but during the computing, thinking opening a program stuff like that the temp will rise which is typical cause its thinking then the fans kick up. Your right its supposed to kick the fans up when the temp goes up but usually the fans just kick up to a certain speed thats constant or consistent if that makes any sense, not move back and forth like a bad carburator thats getting gas and your idling rough.

I contacted gateway and explained the same thing, gave them a five minute readout from SiSoft using the enivroment monitor that shows the changes of speeds and what not they said this.

Thank you for your reply. If the issue started after the BIOS update,
please note that the system needs to be sent in for service since
internal components needs to be reseated which are not user replaceable.
This is to reset to the original BIOS.

Before purchasing a new power supply, I recommend that you send the
system to a local repair shop first for diagnosis and repair. This is
to isolate whether if it is the BIOS or the power supply that is causing
the issue.

If determined that the power supply is defective, you may contact a
Gateway Consultant for compatible parts and purchase information.

When they say reseated are they reffering to having the guts taking out and just put back in? If thats the case I can do all that Ive had my system all apart before to clean out the dirt

On the fan controlller which one would be ideal? I looked over at newegg.com theres quit a few of them would I need to buy a new fan and the controller?

Thankyou for your help most appreciated.
