Fast Games but Slow Desktop

I recently bought the following pc:

core 2 quad q6600 2.4gb (4 cpu)
2gb ram
geforce 8800 gts 320mb
320gb hard drive

The games ive ran on this pc have run great as i expected, but the desktop is really slow considering the specs, can anyone tell me why this is?
 
Check the Task Manager and processes to check if theres anything unusual.

What make/model is your hard drive?
 
oh hard drive sorry, its a 320mb serial ATA II hard drive with 8mb cache (7200rpm) not sure of the make, think it might be western digital caviar.
