File Sharing, Please Help!!!

I have been trying to network my two computers for over a year and a half now, and it still doesn't work! I have tried to follow the instructions in the sticky above, but I cannot get it to work.

I have one desktop (XP Home, wired over ethernet to a Linksys WRT54G, which in turn is connected to a DSL Modem and a Linksys WPS54G Printer Server) and a laptop (XP Home, B Standard Centrino, connected to WRT54G wirelessly).

I have them on the same workgroup, Homelan and are able to access the internet through the WRT54G. I have right clicked on both HDDs and enabled sharing on each. If I go into Start\My Network Places\View Workgroup Computers\ it shows the two computers and the print server, but when I attempt to double click on the other computer it comes up with this:

"\\PACKBELL is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Access is denied."

How can I change this? Thanks a lot in advance.:)

EDIT: I forgot to say that they are both SP2, and have disabled the Windows Firewall and Norton 06 and McAfee 06 on both while I attempt to enable file sharing on both computers.

First of all, NEVER EVER EVER share the root of a drive (aka C:\) as it is a SERIOUS security hole.

I have had this problem, many times. For some reason i am unable to share files through my router (Linksys WAG54G) but it works through a switch (DLINK DES-1005D), Do you have a switch/hub that you could try?

also, Can you share files if you plug the laptop into the network? (not wireless).

again, dont share the root of the drive, this is very important as you have a wireless network and if someone gained access to it they would be able to install programs on your computer by adding them into your startup folder or adding a registry keys. (even if your wireless is encrypted, if its wep, it can be broken in 5 mins). take heed! only share folders you need!

Personalized help is all good and fine, as long as one first understands the fundamentals.
 
I managed to get it to work, which I am really pleased about. As the computers aren't connected with fixed IP addresses I can't just got Start/Run/192.xxx.xxx.xxx, so I tried typing in the computer name and then the name of the shared drive, ie. Start/Run/PACKARDBELL/CDRIVE and it worked. I then network mapped the drives onto each PC.

I will take your advice and this weekend change it so that only the document folders are shared and not the entire drive. Cheers for this advice.

Can I just point out that this was in the sticky at the top of the thread.

I'm glad the problem was resolved Craig. And yeah, you definetly want to get that shared directory changed asap.
