formatting simpletech external hd to FAT32

im trying to format my SimpleTech 160GB external HD in FAT32 and found a walkthough of how to do it it says the easiest way is to go to Start>Run and run the CMD command then typing format /FS:FAT32 K: (K: is my external drive) and it will just format itself but i was wondering if this would wipe out everything that is on my external? i have lots of stuff on my HD that i dont want to delete but it would take quite a while to back it up onto my desktop HD

Formatting will indeed erase all data. But I see that the external HD has a capacity of 160 GB, so it might be possible that you see an error message when trying to format. If that should happen, it's best to use a 3rd party application to format the drive. Also mind that when you're using FAT32, you cant store any files that are larger than 4 GB in size.

But why do you want to format the drive in FAT32?
 
because my ps3 will only recognize FAT32 externals from what ive read and im trying to transfer movies from my computer to my ps3 so i can watch them anytime on my TV
 
If you have a wireless/cabled router that the ps3 is connected to, i suggest using TVersity to setup a media server that your PS3 can connect to to view media files from your pc. To save electricity, whenever you want to watch a film or programme on your PS3 just copy them and turn off your comp.
