Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall Reasonably good firewall, more powerful then ZoneAlarm's free Personal Firewall. Kerio is downloadable as a free trail of the Professional (paid for) edition. However, when the time limit runs out, the program reverts to the free version. Avast Home Edition Probably the best free anti-virus program around. Available for Windows and Linux. Includes on-access protection against web threats, p2p shaing, instant message and email. Excellent!
DVD Rip-O-Matic (for Linux) The only DVD ripper I could get working under SuSE Linux Thank god it's pretty good at what it does. The ripping takes place from an easy-to-use wizard. There are various options to choose from, including desired file size and media format. The ripping process takes around 3 hours to complete for a standard length film.
this startup program controller for control panel (windows (all)) also this to stop win9x rebooting when you don't want it to and this to optmize any internet connection (windows (all)) all pretty good, i couldn't live with windows without them
AcidRip is a Gtk2/Perl application for ripping and encoding DVD's. It neatly wraps MPlayer and MEncoder, which I think is pretty handy, seeing as MPlayer is by far the best bit of video playing kit around for Linux. As well as creating a simple Graphical Interface for those scared of getting down and dirty with MEncoders command line interface, It also automates the process in a number of ways: Parses DVD into contents tree Finds longest title Calculate video bitrate for given filesize Finds black bands and crops them Gives suggestions for improved performance Other stuff! On my Barton 3000+, it takes roughly 20 minutes to encode a 120-minute movie to an MPEG-4 variant.
LMMS Linux MultiMedia Studio (Linux only) LMMS aims to be a free alternative to popular (but commercial and closed- source) programs like FruityLoops, Cubase and Logic giving you the ability of producing music with your computer by creating cool loops, synthesizing and mixing sounds, arranging samples, having more fun with your MIDI-keyboard and much more... LMMS combines the features of a tracker-/sequencer-program (pattern-/channel-/ sample-/song-/effect-management) and those of powerful synthesizers and samplers in a modern, user-friendly and easy to use graphical user-interface. I've used Cubase a fair amount back in my Windows days. It's an excellent program but at £400 it's a little expensive! LMMS is similar to Cubase in many respects and is completey free of charge. It can use VST plugins and Synths designed for Windows and on the whole is pretty easy to use. Debian users can simply type 'apt-get install lmms'. However if you want Windows VST support you need to compile it from source like I did.

Free Virtualisation Software: VMware Server (Windows, Linux) Begin enjoying the benefits of server virtualization with the free VMware Server. VMware Server installs on any existing server hardware and partitions a physical server into multiple virtual machines by abstracting processor, memory, storage and networking resources, giving you greater hardware utilization and flexibility. Streamline software development and testing and simplify server provisioning as you utilize the ability to "build once, deploy many times." Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 (Windows) Use Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 to run multiple operating systems at the same time on the same physical computer. Switch between virtual machines with the click of a button. Use virtual machines to run legacy applications, provide support, train users, and enhance quality assurance. Virtual PC lets you create separate virtual machines on your Windows desktop, each of which virtualizes the hardware of a complete physical computer. Use virtual machines to run operating systems such as MS-DOS®, Windows, and OS/2. You can run multiple operating systems at once on a single physical computer and switch between them as easily as switching applications—instantly, with a mouse click. Virtual PC is perfect for any scenario in which you need to support multiple operating systems, whether you use it for tech support, legacy application support, training, or just for consolidating physical computers. Benefits Virtual PC provides a time-saving and cost-saving solution anywhere users must run multiple operating systems. Use Virtual PC in the following scenarios: Ease Migration: Run legacy applications in a virtual machine instead of delaying the deployment of a new operating system just because of application incompatibility. Test your migration plans using virtual machines instead of actual physical computers. Do More in Less Time: Support staff can run multiple operating systems on a single physical computer and switch between them easily. They can also restore virtual machines to their previous state almost instantly. Train students on multiple operating systems and virtual networks instead of purchasing and supporting additional computers. Streamline Deployment: Test software on different operating systems more easily. One crashing application or operating system doesn’t affect others. Accelerate Development: Increase quality assurance by testing and documenting your software on multiple operating systems using virtual machines. Decrease time-to-market by reducing reconfiguration time.

TeamSpeak TeamSpeak is a quality, scalable application which enables people to speak with one another over the Internet. TeamSpeak consists of both client and server software. The server acts as a host to multiple client connections, capable of handling literally thousands of simultaneous users. This results in an Internet based teleconferencing solution that works in a variety of applications such as team mates speaking with one another while playing their favorite online game, small businesses cutting costs on long distance charges, or for personal communication with friends and family. Among TeamSpeak's incredible range of features are crystal clear voice communication, Windows/Linux cross-platform design for both the client and server, a built-in web based administration panel for the server, and a highly scalable user permissions system. An added feature to Authorized TeamSpeak Host Providers (ATHPs) that wish to rent servers to their customers includes the ability to spawn multiple instances of the server from a single server session, thus easily facilitating 'server-farming'. (i primarily use this for Gaming but i have family that use it and we use it instead of running up phone bills and wasting minutes on cell phones)
