Hey, I seem to have a problem with the video card. When i play certain games i get this weird distortion on the screen. it looks as though its part of the screen gets strechted out.

I have a FX5200, 900Mhz, 328MB Ram. i also have updated drivers for my video card.

This problem occurs on most newer games that require more power to run them but they run fine aside from this problem. I will try to get a screenshot of it to make this more clear.

I was wondering if anyone knew what was wrong with this and if it is repairable.
 
what's your power supply, CPU, motherboard, and any other hardware. Also, what's your case and cooling.
 
hm, thats a good question. well i have a Ameritrend or something like that motherboard.
Power supply and CPU? no clue. How would i figure these things out, iam not very good with computers.
Oh i have Win XP SP2 by the way.
 
To see your CPU, right click my computer then go to properties. It should tell you there. your PSU can be found by opening your case and taking a look at a small box at the top or bottom end of your case.

It might be that your graphics card is overheating and causing artifacts.
 
First, IF it's overheating, I'd look at my cooling first. You may need to get a can of compressed air to blow the dust out of the system first. Secondly, you might want to consider at the very least removing the CPU heatsink, cleaning off the thermal pad or goop with some isopropyl alcohol and using some new thermal paste like Arctic Silver or Arctic Ceramique. Also in the same vein, check the video card's fan (if it has one) and make sure that it's spinning. If it's not that may very well be contributing to the problem, and you should look into replacing it.
 
Your card may have become slightly dislodged and needs to be inserted correctly. A friend of mine had a similar problem and all I did was that and it was fine after that.
 
ok. i checked the power supply its a Turbolink Switching Power Supply.
I used air on the video card and the rest of the computer and the fan on the video card is running.
And its not dislodged.

But this problem happens throughout playing games, including right at the begining, and comes and goes when you are in certain positions on the screen.

so wouldnt it take some time for it to get overheated and start doing this?
or is it overheated all the time i just dont know until i play these high spec games?
 
you might as wel download FRAPS and make sure your frames are going over 30 if they aren't then u have no choice, lower the resolutions or settings, the fx5200 is good but its not neccesarily top of the line, and in games like doom 3 its gonna create some lag unfortunately. the lags created when there is too much detail on screen, some good things to do are lower water resolution or AA/AF if you have it on. or jus lower screen resolution. trus me load FRAPS and if it dips beneath 30 then thats when ur gonna experience lag.
 
ya but FRAPS would be somethin that i load for FPS right? because this problem isnt only in those, actually i havent played any FPS that create this problem. I incounter this on The Sims 2, Silent Hunter 3, and Rome Total War. I also have Swat 4 and i havent seen this problem yet.

your not going to get 30fps in doom 3 with a ge force fx 5200, i have 2 of them cards, a 128mb version and a 256mb version, and they both struggle running ut2k4 on highest settings.
 
I have a GeForce FX 5200, i dont play any games though, well a couple that my friends have bought me for my birthday but i am not a serious gamer, i just use my computer for everyday stuff, i really dont know what could be causing the problems though, hmmmm interesting....
 
could be, monitor, monitor reseloution, moniter hz, graphics card may be disloged, graphics card may be faulty.

hmm, if you install games before you actually install the graphics drivers, that sometimes can cause problems :\
