Desktop Linux has a rather indepth analysis of the battle between Microsoft and Linux in 2007, when Vista and SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 hit the stores.

In one corner, we have the champ -- Windows. Come January, it will come out swinging with what Microsoft tells us is the latest and greatest version ever -- Vista.

In the other corner, we have the challenger -- OpenSUSE 10.1, the latest shipping version of Novell/SUSE's community Linux. Sometime this summer, its commercial version, SUSE Linux Enterprise 10, will come out looking to KO the champ.

I see little reason to get Vista, given how many features they've dropped from it. I think it could be Microsoft's biggest blunder since WinME.

I really do not pretend to be very knowledgable about Windows.
I feel that the main issue for XP users like me is - what will Vista do that XP will not? :ohah:
What will make a lightweight user like me drop the expensive XP for a probably more expensive Vista? I use a P4 prescott which is already trailing, with 512MB RAM and a measly 128MB GCard. Vista boasts multimedia capabilities that my system will probably not support very well. It will be like running XP on my old Dell. Do'able but for what? I'd rather stay with XP which works 'well' :O for me than throw loads of money on an OS that I, honestly, do not need....

I feel that for me, Vista is a next generation which I, do not particularly like or need to see. Maybe when XP becomes obsolete, much like windows 98 ro 95 etc, I will conceder changing. Then again, I would probably kiss Bill and his creation goodby anyway. :P

Anyway, that's me....

As for SUSE, I doubt I will ever go anywhere near ths distro.
Nothing against it (never tried it), but from mega's experiences, I think I prefer to stay with the *ubuntus or Mandriva. :cool:

I ran ME for a month and then went to Win2k. Vista looks to be the new ME, minus the extra horrid stability issues.
 
Well Considering how long XP has been out, windows is probably looking for another way to make money, as well, more so recently with Mac's growing in popularity, windows, as it looks, is going for a fresh "hip" look, like that of OS X. Also i think they want to address the security issues with windows, but it seems that might not be happening as much. I dunno just my thoughts
 
Try to add security to the existing Windows architecture is like bolting steel plates to a cow. After all's said and done, it's still a cow, it's just more cumbersome. Windows must be redesigned from scratch in order to offer any kind of real security improvements.

Give me some information to the contrary and I will gladly retract my statement. :) [ot]My metaphor is loosley derived from the old Chinese proverb: "You cannot make a silk purse from a sow's ear." Windows is a sow's ear, it will never be a silk purse. The closest one might come to that goal would involve throwing away the exisiting Windows codebase and rebuilding it from the ground up.[/ot]
 
One would hope so, as all I see Vista featuring is Aero, and you can use something like Samurize or Window Blinds and get the same effect. The NT code isn't horrible, but it's getting long in the tooth. Vista would be much more appealing if Microsoft stuck to their guns and included all the features they were supposed to.
 
Suse 10.1 has my vote sofar my experiences with it are far greater than any windows and comes close to mandriva(my opinion). If Suse doesnt put out Vista for good which I have my doubts ( mainly because of the funny ppl out there that wouldnt even give linux a chance).Then I hope Suse at least take a huge chunk outta Microsofts profits.
 
The only problem is that Microsoft has liscense contracts with pre-built system vendors to install Windows. Like it or not, Microsoft still has the lion's share of the OS market, and much of the software on shelves is still designed to run on Windows. I don't expect that to change anytime soon. Will it happen? Most likely, but it's not for certain. However, given the recent shake ups like Dell offering AMD-based systems and Apple switching from PowerPC to x86 architecture, it's certainly not beyond the realm of possibility. If there's enough of a consumer demand to warrant the offering, the tide will turn.
 
There is such a vast divide between the technical and non-technical that most people have no idea there even is something out there besides Windows. When Windows crashes, it's not "Damn Windows!", it's "Damn computers!" as if all computers just crash for no reason, get virii infections, have spyware, must be defragmented on a regular basis and need to be reinstalled every few months. This doesn't just include your grandmother, but also many sys-admins and those in highly technical positions. They have no idea there is anything out there but Windows. I was talking to another engineer the other day, and he actually said, "I might use Linux, if it wasn't CLI-only"... WTF? Linux has more GUI choices than any other OS I know of. *sigh*
 
i actually think vista will sell well among some types, just because of the new interface. to me, if you slap a new user interface on anything, a lot of people will think that its automatically that its the flashiest must-have, regardless of how well it actually works. so maybe the general population won't realize that vista is a flop until its too late.
 
anti-trend pretty has is down with the stupid computers thing people just have now clue for example, my dad who is a decent computer buff had no idea that there are so many different linux versions and that they have very solid gui's not just a command line interface, or that they were like OS X and have very secure operating systems.
