I suppose the first sentence is what your looking for...
1hz = 1 per second
1000hz = 1Khz
1000Khz = 1Mhz
1000mhz = 1Ghz
3.4Ghz = 3,400,000,000 sums a second
With processors in PCs a higher clock rate doesn't always mean it is quicker.
ie An AMD Athlon XP2000 only runs at 1.66ghz but when ive tested my two pcs the AMD at 1.66ghz is nearly as fast as my Pentium 4 when its running at 2ghz.
Intel have been more efficient with the clock rate though lately.

The clock speed of a CPU is not the sole indicator of performance. For surfing the web, I can't tell a difference between my 800MHz Pentium 3 and my Athlon 64 3000+. You would notice a difference in rendering or audio tasks with a faster CPU. For more menial stuff, you don't need a lot of CPU grunt, so a 40000GHz CPU won't really show a difference over a 700MHz CPU.
Today, the CPU is not as important as it used to be. It's still needed, being a primary component of a computer, but it's influence is not as great as it used to be 15-20 years ago.
