Graphics card advice please.

DavidNW

Big Geek
I want to change the video graphics of my PC. At present, I have onboard graphics, which uses 32 MBs of my 512 MBs of RAM. My PC is rather old now and I don’t intend to spend much more money on upgrading it, so I have bought a Radeon 9250 AGP 128MB Graphics Video Card quiet cheaply, for what was a bargain price!

Questions: should I disable my onboard graphics memory (the 32 MB) via BIOS before installing the new card, to avoid any conflicts (I’m thinking, rightly or wrongly) before I install the new card? Also, should I notice an appreciable improvement in graphics display with the new card over the old onboard S3 ProSavage Display Adaptor?

Cheers,

David.

firstly, well done - onboard grfx are usually not good (performance) and they pinch some of your RAM (32Mb in your case)
yeah, your right
  1. disable onboard grfx
  2. then install new card (presuming you have an AGP grfx card & slot)
  3. boot and install drivers and stuff
now you've binned your onboard grfx, you now have an extra 32Mb RAM

Edit: there will be an improvment but you may have to benchmark your system to see the full perfomance upgrade

Thanks - yes I do have an AGP slot, so all should be well!

yeah, your BIOS may not need to have the onboard grfx to be disabled before you connect an AGP grfx card (mine didn't, wnen i replaced ondoard grfx) but it's good practice to always disable onboard grfx first :good:
