I think Microsoft doesn't so much give a damn as much as they need to put it in if they're going to get any sort of help from the music industry for the Zune and other crap. Let's see, who sells the most operating systems in the world? Uh, that would be Microsoft. From the music industry's point of view, making Microsoft put DRM in is geinus...evil genius.

MS has the main codec for HD-DVD & a few Bluray titles in VC-1, as well as the HDi spec for interactivity in HD-DVD, because of this their going to do everything possible to keep studios happy.

If they can keep the studios happy that opens up doors into the IPTV market where they can finally penetrate the living room like they hoped to with media center.
