Half Life 2 Monitor Troubles

My monitor is fairly new, and so I didn't have the minimum and maximum resolution settings set in my mind. When first I got the monitor, I started up Half Life 2 and set the resolution to 1600x1200, wanting to see how it looked. the screen went black and a small window popped up that said "Out of range". Because the screen is completely black, I had no way of adjusting the resolution, so I reinstalled.
Now, a month later, I'm on the very last chapter of the game, and during a particularly choppy sequence, I turn the resolution as far down as it can go, in order to see how fast the game will run. The notice appears again.

Many other games have a file on the computer that controls settings, and can be edited in notepad. I can't find one for HL2. Does this file exist for the game, is there some other way of fixing the resolution, or can I not fix the resolution without reinstalling?
 
Well your monitor catn go up to 1600x1200 if it says out of range, as for the low resolution problem, try turning the resolution down before you go into the game and see what happens, maybe the monitor cant go really low, even tho most monitors should, my max reported resolution for my monitor is somthing like 1600x1200 but it cant really go that higher, only about 1280x1024.
 
I know what "out of range" means, the problem is that there's no outside configuration window for the game. I don't think turning down the desktop resolution will work, because the one I chose was "720xSomething", and my monitor only goes down to 800x600. Thanks for the reply.
 
well it sucks that that happened, but if you have to reinstall you can always type the cheat that taeks you to the level that you were on. or you could back up your saves before you reinstall. i've done it a few times. sorry to hear this buddy. I'll check the steam files to see if i find anything. Also, i don't know about current drivers, but i believe Nvidia (if you have it or if there's an Ati equivalent) used to have a file you add to the registry which unlocks resolutions and refresh rates, you could set it in your drivers to force a resolution for a certain game, that may be able to fix the problem if you could find it. Damn i used to use it with oooold ass drivers though, try coolbits to see if it comes up.
 
Most LCD Monitors usually can only go up to 1280x1024, as that's LCD's native resolution... Though, sometimes it depends on the size of the monitor. How big is your monitor?
