Hello, and thank-you for visiting this thread: I really appreciate it.
I've just reinstalled my OS onto a new HDD, and I'm just trying to get some files off my old one that doesn't work so well anymore. It's a Maxtor 160GB IDE drive which I set to slave and my computer does recognize it and I can browse through everything but my C:/Documents and Settings/Owner. When I try and open it it tells me "C:/Documents and Settings/Owner is not accessible." "Access is denied."

I did have a windows password on that account. I don't know if that has anything to do with it but I have a feeling it might.

Just some info: My new HDD is on SATA150 (it's an P4 Socket 478), this is a different mobo than the one I was using with my old HDD.

I dont know there must be an easier way and im not trying sell linux! but id boot up from one of my xubuntu cds and open thunar from the terminal as root and copy them over that way. Im assuming it will work anyway.
 
Thanks, I'll try that on one of my friend's Linux computers, but I still need a more practical approach at this problem. I'll most likely need to access them directly through windows because there are more than 80GB worth of data. I won't be able to use CDs or even DVDs and I have no idea how to network a Linux computer with Windows. I just never really worked with Linux.

Maybe it has something to do with my account being set to private when I was setting up my password. Man, I hope I can get it open.
 
Is the old hard drive not bootable at all? If you can boot to it, I would boot to that and copy the data over to your other drive. Another option may be to set up a user account with the same name and same password on your new hard drive and then use that account to browse over to the old files. I'm not 100% sure if that will work, but it does sound like a permissions/rights problem.
