Hard disk starts infanantly sounding like defragging

hello

i have a 160 hard disk on which i have a 20 gig partition, it is FAT 32 becuase i use old norton ghost. i have defraged it all but unless i re image it i know that the auto defragin or whatever its doing will not stop, if i start using it it stops and when i leave it for 2 mins it starts, it dosent affect performance at all not even a tiny bit.

i need to know why it starts sonding liek its defragin and because i think its because its got 4 gig space left on teh windows partion maybe

it used to do it after i re images the os and then it stoped after a hour or so, it hasent stoped for a few months because i haven re imaged it, i keep my own image with old norton ghost its a fat 32 partion, an AMD athalon 64 3200 on XP pro with alot ALOT of dev software packed onto it using incremental stable backups from the initial clean install every time i add software i do it from the last image so its steralised. unfortunatly after 3 years iv reached the maximum old norton and fat 32 will allow for an image thats 3 X 3 gig compressed files.

any ideas on how to stop it from this defrag like operation on system idles

please help


thanks any sugestions whatsoever plz i dont whan re image anymore i think iv reacvhed super stability on this OS, i been building its application base for over 2.5 years without having a failure once because of keeping the image and data on another partion, its pationed 20, 70 ,70 with 20 as the OS the hard drives 72 rpm i think, i think its more to do with the OS

i turned off my screen saver, put on task manager aranged it by CPU usage, and waited for it, it was Microsoft Indexing Service, i turmned it off and its ok now, this was coz i was running the server and back when i installed it i thogh i may need it but i dont because its a dev server, the machines contents have grown so the service is trying to cope but it never stops indexing so i turned it off and this has broght peace to my life thanks everyone. The process is called

cisv.exe

you go to add remove programs window components and remove Microsoft Indexing Service, its used for making searches faster so it just indexes all files on your computer and even the contents of every file so thats wy it thrashes.

It's a service, which you can disable in the Administrative Tools applet in the Control Panel.
