I have tried to install a new hard drive on another computer in the house its 320gb the compter is amd athlon 1800. I have installed the same hard drive on my other computer which is the same . But all I get is disk read error. I had no trouble installing the other one which I purchased from pc world. But this compter Im having trouble with. It started to load windows then said disk read error. Could you help please Thanks Cas

Hi mate,

First of all i'd try a different IDE cable has the one on the new PC might be faulty. Failing this try going onto the manufatorers website and download a HDD diagnostic disc and boot from this, A diagnostic disc should check the HDD and highlight any errors. If that doesnt work and there is no data on that disc you want to keep i would try formatting it and resinstallnig windows. or trying to fix the master boot record (MBR) as this could also cause the problem.

If there is data on the drive you want to keep one way of getting it off would be to connect it as a slave drive on a working computer and you should be able to accses the data and copy it that way.

Hope this helps Dave

Hi I actually took the hd back and got a refund in case it was faulty. I tried another one that I had up and running on the other computer that was working fine and that said the same disk read error. Oopps well shop refunded anyway. Cant understand this the orginal 40 gig hard drive works fine but the one that is working ok in the other computer says the same as the new one Do you think that in this computer it wont take a 320. I cant understand this as the processor is the same as the other computer. That sounds really confusing. Hope you understanfd what Im saying  Thanks Cas

Hi mate i think i get you how old is the computer?? if its fairly new it should handle 320GB no problem???

Maybe try the IDE lead out of the other computer as well??

Also have you check the jumper configuration on the back of the hard drive, if you need any information abou how this just be set post back and ill explain

hope this helps Dave

Yes have checked all that. Seem to have a problem with this computer Its about 5 years old, Its now switching itself off and I have to start it in safe mode and then do a restore. Its doing my head in now. Everynow and again it makes a clicking noise also its going really slow. thanks Cas

Hi mate,

Sorry for the delay mate why dont you try reinstalling windows has it could be and error with that? the clicking noise sounds to me like the hard drives failing however older harddrives used to be alot more noisey that modern ones. i'd try installing windows mate???

post back Dave

first, which flavour of Windoze are you using ?

because XP SP1 can only address (see) 137Gb & i think you also need a 48 bit HDD controller for the machine to see over 137Gb, as the machine is 5 years old, it may only have a 36 bit HDD controller

but you can install another PCI HDD controller like this, but, you would be best disabling the onboard HDD controller in the BIOS

BTW: sorry about the unknown shop, but, IDE controllers are getting harder to find (if it is IDE) is it IDE, SATA or SCSI (pronounced scuzzy) ?

Edit: and that particular HDD controller also has RAID & is ATA133 compatable

Oh, hard drive gave up the ghost today, I tried reloading windows and it wouldnt have, it bought an new one 160 installed fine. But still having problems copying some dvd disks theres nothing on the hard drive only windows, power dvd, and pinnacle, I have used this programme for about 3 years now. But copying some dvds it stops half way and says error. This is mainly what I use my computer for as Im a dj and I do cds and dvds. Cant understand why all of a sudden this programme is doing this. I thought other programmes may be coming and and interferng but theres nothing on there have you any ideas. Thanks Cas:doh:
