Help! Not Exactly Newbie But Scared

I built my mate's PC. Simply it was a P4 compatible motherboard, Gigabyte Titan but I can't remember exact specs.

It was working just fine thanks...

The other day he boots up to the sound of nothing, no beep, nothing. Well apart from floppy drive having a fit. I disconnected FD still nothing. I got an engineer out after I'd tried the obvious. He reckoned MoBo was dead.

So I figured I'd get a new motherboard for me, futureproofing myself slightly, anf give him the old one.

So I bought an Intel D865PERL MoBo because it can support up to P4 3.2 and more RAM than I currently have.

Problem was I was too hasty I think. I read rhe specs and it mentions a lot about higher GHz processors but mine is a humble 2.4 (god knows how much GHz - how do you find out? Belarc doesn't 'advise' on that one) so will it still run on my new board.

I still have the old board and may flash the BIOS to see if it does any good but I can't see that helping.

Please reply to this post: I know most of you are thinking (probably) 'oh f*** off newbie' but we can't help the level of technicality each of us are at. Most of my friends are just learning what a mouse is. I am getting more confident at building computers, but would balk at modding them seriously as there is too much I don't know, especially the fate that befell my friend's PC.

no, lol were are not thinking f*** off newbie, as i am kind of a newbie, and everyone is a newbie at first, you just have to learn, as everything i have learnt about computers is either form problems i have had, or what i have seen on the net, and from coming on forums like this and getting help, and then taking in what they say and remembering it.

anyway....

if your asking, will the 2.4ghz processor run on that board, well then yes, if its a socket 478 processor, also if you have pc3200ram (ddr 400mhz) then with that processoe the speed of the ram will be slower at about 333mhz i think, as for the ram to operate at its max speed, a processor with an 800mhz fsb is required (pentium 4 prescotts/northwood)

in my manual for the 865pe motherboard, it says it supports celeron D (prescott) and pentium 4 prescott or northwood up to 3.2ghz, what is the exact brand of your 865pe motherboard, eg asus or dfi, like mine in an intel 865pe (DFI infinity motherboard) you may need ot visit the motherboard manufacturers site first to have a look at the manual, it should work as i said, if its a socket 478, but as in my manual for the same type of board, mine only supports prescott or northwood, so it may not support it.

What I'm planning to do you see is give my mate my existing (old Sony Vaio that's tricky to work with, a Sony Vaio PCV RX406 with 512 added RAM and a GeForce FX5200. It still has its original mobo and cpu which, I think is a P4 2.4. Full specs for it can be found here:

phew!!!

anyway, that mobo with the same processor and memory from the VAIO specs, which is what I'm hoping will work.

I just need that setup to work for now, untiil I buy faster RAM and a Prescott.

from what i can see, it looks like oyur motherboard will support the skt 478 2.4ghz pentium 4, as i cant see anyhting that says it only supports northwood, so anyway, i hope i have helped.

dont you have pc3200 ram?
 
if its 184 pin, yes, if your going to use that pentium 4 (2.4ghz) i think that you will find that pc3200 ram will be at the same speed as that pc210 ram, i think, thats if pc2100 ram is 333.
 
im not sure if pc2100 is supported but im guessing a 70% it is, im not a big expert on the intel side but according to the specs it shud work properly

Memory is what I still yet don't quite get. So it's measured in size and speed, etc but its still flying a little over my head.

I'm guessing faster memory is better, obviously.

So to cut a long story short, do people think the memory from the Vaio (see above) will work on the new mobo (see above)?

Sorry to pester. Once this bits done I'll be pestering about IDE and SATA :cool:
