Help With Processor

Hi all i need help with my processor i ran cpu-z and it says my cpu is running at 2.8 ghz but its 3.4ghz ??? maybe i need to change somthin to get the full speed or maybe i need to overclock it i dont know but could somone help me please any help would be great thanks.

I am not sure, but maybe its been throttled?, run a game or something and see if it goes back to 3.4ghz. Resetting the bios might help too.
 
EDIT: I typed my reply below without even looking at the image! Apparently you do have a 200mhz fsb but the multiplier is at 14!
Have you tried other program like cpu-z? Try System Information and System Properties in windows. Also have a look in the BIOS and see what is calls the CPU there.
I dont think ive ever seen this before.

Where did you get the cpu? Was it a home build?

I take it it is a 800mhz fsb?

3400mhz / 200mhz = 17 multiplier

the next standard step down from 200mhz fsb is 166mhz.

166mhz x 17 = 2822mhz.

It looks at though either your ram or cpu has had a hickup and the motherboard has knocked the fsb down to prevent damage.

My guess is that it will be the cas rating for your ram. Its not unknown for a motherboard to read the default incorrectly from time to time.
Go into BIOS and manually set your ram timings to the correct settings and set the cpu/fsb to auto. Hopefully it will bump the fsb to 200 and stay at 200mhz.
 
System properties is in control panel. On the opening box it should say how much ram you have, the cpu name and its speed.

System Information is in the start menu under accessories and system tools.

To get into BIOS you usually have to tap del immediately after the beep when you first turn your pc on. Somewhere in the menus (normally the second menu) it will give you control of your ram and cpu/fsb settings. Dont go changing them if you dont know what you are doing. Just see what the cpu name is and the fsb speed.
 
I dont know what you mean by gam. Dont overclock.

Do you know what motherboard you have? Did you build the pc or is it a factory built one?
 
Well the simple thing is this

Your CPU has Hyperthreading and speed step. The speed step reduces the voltage and multiplier so that the speed reduces resulting in less heat being produced. When your computer needs more power, it simply increases the multiplier to get 3400 mhz.

Dont worry its perfectly normal. If you want the speed to be at 3400mhz all the time, go into your bios and switch of speed step however i recommend that you leave it enabled.
 
Cheers Izzy, I didnt know these P4s had that feature. I always thought they were left for laptops. I'll have to look over the specs sometime.

well a friend had the same processor and he was wondering why it did it. eventually he found out and i told him that he can disable the speed step but these p4's do heat up quite a bit so i said leave it enabled, just in case it overheats, the pc will throttle itself down.
 
I agree with the speedstepping point. I don't know if there's a BIOS option or software installed that is doing this, but it is likely something you can disable. Before you do that, I'd use a program like [google]Speedfan[/google] to keep an eye on your CPU temperature.
 
It wont go over 3400mhz. Its the multiplier which is changing and its max is 17. (17x200mhz=3.4ghz)
You dont need to do anything.
 
Speedstepping is a technology Intel came up with for use in mobile chips first. All it does is drop the multiplier when the CPU's full power isn't needed, thus saving battery life. You should be able to disable it.
