High CPU Temperature

Hi,

I recently picked up a used PC with the following hardware

Motherboard: Gigabyte X-48-DS4
CPU:Intel Core 2Quad Q9450 2.6Ghz
RAM:8GB(4*2GB) Kingston Hyper X PC2-6400
2 x Sapphire HD 4870 512MB DDR5 in Crossfire
800GB (2 x Seagate 400GB 7200RPM in RAID0 array)
LG DVDRW+/- DL Burner
Coolermaster Real Power 850W Modular PSU
Black Fractal Design XL Server Case
Microsoft Windows Ultimate 64bit Edition

The CPU temperature used to be on 80 degrees C on idle and 100 degrees C on 20% CPU load. The computer used to randomly shutdown.I have applied a new thermal paste ( Arctic -Alumina) and it has brought it down to 70 deg C on idle and 85 deg C on 20% CPU load.( no random shutdowns yet..)

I think this temp is too high on idle considering the PC isn't doing anything, I have taken 2 measurement one from bios and coretemp software inside windows and both show the same temperature reading.

One thing i noticed is core1/core2 temperature sometimes indicates a negative reading of -20C core3/core4 temperature readings shows higher than 90 degree C.

Any ideas what's causing this??
Help much appreciated

Thanks

Hi Ghostman,

I checked the bios and all settings are set to Auto. The interesting part is when i did a cold boot,( the pc was shutdown whole night) the cpu temperature in bios reported 82 degrees C. Can the sensors be wrong ??? Anyway to check and fix this ??

The previous night i did a load test and when CPU hit 100%, the cpu temperature got to 110 degree C and the computer shutdown

Thanks

Thats WAY to HOT !!!! It should be below 60 degrees.. Open the case and check the heat shield to see if it is clogged with dust.. I would buy the one I told you about and put new thermal paste... I had a computer that was running 80 degrees.. I put an artic cooler on it and now it is running at 37 degrees..

Thanks Ghostman,

Ill get that cooler and see how it goes... I did clean the heatsink and applied arctic alumina but that didn't help

Hi Ghostman,

Believe it or Not! the temp has now dropped to 20 deg C at Idle and 30 Degree C at full load. Amazing 70 degree drop. I installed a new thermaltake frio ock CPU cooling and that did the trick

Thanks for your help
