Hey guys, well, as the topic says, im looking for some help with the x1650 Pro.

My 6600GT gave out on me, so i had to replace it, and with the nice speeds of the x1650, the 256mb and the GDDR3, i decided to purchase one.

Anyway, roll on to yesterday.

I removed all drivers from my system, (not with DriverCleaner) for the 6600GT, turned it off, slapped in the x1650 and powered back up. Got to the XP loading screen, then, the moniter shut off, or sounded like it did anyway, the light was still on.

So, into safe mode we go, to check things, and everyhting seemed alright, didnt remove anything, and restarted. This time, it finished the XP loading, then told me my "System32" folder was missing and a repair was needed.

So, a repair was done, and it started up fine, logged into XP, installed the ATI drivers (from the disc with the card) and restarted. Got to the XP loading, and told me my "System32" folder was missing again.

So i restarted, and mashed F8, as you do, 'till the options came up, (now, i would have thought it would have told me "System32" folder was missing again here, but it didnt) started up in safe mode, and uninstalled the x1650.

I restarted again, to find everything fine, no "System32" folder error, XP loaded fine, and logged in fine. So, i thought id try the newest drivers for the card, same thing happened after a restart, that smegging folder was missing again.

(If i doesnt give me the "System32" folder error, then it makes the sound of the moniter powering off after finishing loading XP and does very little else)

My system:

WinXP Pro
AMD Athlon 64 +3000
2 x 512MB Corsair something or another
EZCool 550w PSU
(Ask if you need anything else)

Now, im kind of at my wits end here, ive borrowed a spare 6600GT from a friend for the time being, but, help me please.

Could you expand on what went wrong with your 6600GT? I know it's shot, but how long was it acting up, etc ?

Run Memtest for a few hours to see if there's a problem with your RAM.

Are you getting a BSOD with the system32 folder or is it just a black screen stating that the folder doesn't exist?

Have you checked the cables to your hard drive(s) to make sure they're fully connected?

Well, we had a power-outage here, and when it came back on, the 6600GT wasnt working, had everything else checked, and it all seems fine, was just the card.

Memtest has been run, and went for ever.

No BSOD, just the black screen.

Have unplugged, then replugged everything, practically rebuiling it in the process, all i didnt do was unscrew the motherboard.

(TY for the reply)

Your power supply may very well likely have taken a hit, and that's causing a problem. Unfortunately, the power issue was probably passed along to your video card. I don't know if it's affected your hard drive or not, but from what you're saying, I would definitely invest in a new power supply.
Get a 450-500W (or better, it won't hurt) power supply from the likes of Antec, Enermax, OCZ, Hiper, Tagan, Silverstone, or Seasonic. You should be able to find those brands in UK shops pretty easily.

Right, today I took the system to my local pc hardware store, the mate who lent me the 6600GT for the time being works there.

We tried various PSU's to check to see if it was, indeed, a problem with my PSU, but, unfortunatley, that doesnt seem to be the problem. With numerous PSU's the outcome was the same, the x1650 wouldnt work. We even tried the x1600 that was in a "display" system, (so we didnt have to open a new one, and me having to pay for it) and that worked, straight off.

I suppose im going to have to send it back, as either faulty or incompatible.

Thanks for the ideas anyway Big B, and I'll let you know if theres any further developments.

Yeah, it does sound like a bad card. Just for the hell of it, you could try that Radeon in another known working system, but that's really the only other thing I can think of.
