So, anyway, my gf and I have been looking at getting a console to play on, and while I was thinking of the Xbox 360, the up front cost and all the $$ that comes with being a new console just ended up being too much to stomach. I just picked up a Playstation 2, one of the new slim designs and a second controller.

I knew these things were thin and smaller, but my alarm clocks are beefier than this thing in terms of size. I got a demo disc to play with for now, but I'm looking to snag Burnout Revenge and, of course, Guitar Hero down the road.

Yes, I'm the guy that's very pro-PC here, but there's some types of games that work better on a console. Plus, it's less hassle than doing a LAN party.
 
And you NEVER need to worry about system requirements or conflicts. ;)

Consoles are great, but not very suitable for FPS games (because mouse and keyboard works better), unless they have been designed for consoles.
 
Racing games on console are great though, much better than any on the PC unless you have a good controller.
 
Halo is the best FPS on a console, however, as it is, it's not that great in the grand scheme of things in the genre itself. If the game requires accuracy in pointing, there's no substitue for a mouse and keyboard.

I really think that there are some games that are better suited to a console or a PC, usually not both. Sure, you can buy a game controller, but that's effectively going back to the console, IMO. A keyboard is great for games with a lot of commands, but poor for things like side scrollers. It's a pain to try and play Street Fighter II with a keyboard, but it was developed with certain controls in mind, not a keyboard.

As long as there's a variety of games people want to play, you'll have a variety of consoles and PC's that excel in certain games.
 
I don't agree about the FPS arguement, I think consoles have nailed it with how sensitive they've made the controls. Take Rainbow Six Vegas for example, using a sniper rifle I can hit someone directly in between their eyes from across the map using my console, no mouse needed.

There is one genre I think consoles should forever stay away from though, RTS games, there is no possible way of making those games work well on a console, C&C 3 failed with the 360's controls, Halo Wars is set to follow the same, I can bet LOTR 2 suffered from that too. You need the keyboard just for the sheer number of macros and mini-management required in those games.

That's true, but at the time you've succesfully aimed at someone, you've been shot a dozen times (In my case)

Agreed. Back when I had a 360 I played the demo of C&C 3. That was really bad.
 
Since the only games I might be wanting to play on a console are FPSs, then it's not quite reasonable (IMO) to buy Xbox or PS3, or even PS2.

therefore I bought a oldschool 8-bit console to fool around and drown in memories of the good old days and am playing all the cool PSX (via several emulators) classics I loved so much (the best is when I take my thrustmaster controller and hook my PC to the TV, I almost feel like I was using a PSX :D).
 
I used to have one of those slim-line PS2's - they were great.

I think my brother sold it without telling me though... I lent it to him, it disappeared and right off the bat he offered me money in return... he never does that so I was rather suspicious.

I have a PS3 now though :D
