How to save data before formatting?

I have a Toshiba notebook, running windows 7 64bits. A few days ago when i start up windows the "Error Recovery" Screen came up and windows won't boot up or can not load to recover.

I have some data that i would like to retrieve before i reinstall windows from a partition. So i've removed the hard drive and slot it in to a HDD dock and try to use another laptop to retrieve the data. However when i openned the storage/disk manager in windows, its reconise the disk on and off about every 15 seconds and i can't give this drive a letter unless i format it. So if someone could help me, if there is a way to save some data from this HDD? Is there a problem with this HDD? Wish someone could help.

It sounds like the Drive has Disk errors on it.. You will need to piggy back that drive onto another with some special hardware.. Once hooked up to a host PC, you can then use scandisk to try to fixed your disk.. Next .using the host PC, you can go into that drive and copy or burn all file /folders needed..

So what type of special hardware is needed? i should think i need a desktop with some spare hdd? correct? if so i may need to bother my friend...
 
Finally got my HDD going, didn't work well with the USB docking. I when to my friends and plug my HDD through SATA cable and used as a slave. My friend's XP did an automatic chkdsk on startup, fixed it. When i get home, i plug the HDD back in and windows 7 was able to recover and got everything back.
