Adjust colours to get them as true-to-life as possible. Make sure the brightness doesn't cause you to squint when you look at the screen.
That's a couple of pointers, every monitor is different (even models that are the same) and because of that settings will always vary. Plus there's the environment you're using the computer in as well to take into consideration - if you want to get your monitor calibrated to a very high standard then there are 'gadgets' you can buy that adjust your settings to give you better colours etc (not worth it for the average user, graphics designers etc maybe but for home users they'd be a waste of money)
