i'm learning fast

That was not one I planned to visit...I'm scarred for life, man. Just be glad we're not GoatseHardWare (GHW) :eek:
 
:DWoah....this has turned into quite the little thread here.
But yeah we've all learned tons from each other and I think it really helped out a lot of us, serving as a foundation for a lot of our knowledge. I remember I tried to be the first to answer a lot of posts and follow up as fast as I could with responces too. I made it a challenge to scour google for the answers or use my own past experience. The helpful point system also helped to spur a lot of the productive competion there for awhile.
I've been pretty inactive for a while now with school beating down on me and all but I'm glad to see things are looking better than ever.
One question though, and not to sound rude but I'm afraid I don't remember
donkey42 or DavidNW. Are you guys just really fast posters of is there a bit of name changing going on here. I guess a lot happened since I was active.
 
Well a 'Topless Admin' is one thing, but a 'bent over holding open a gaping orfice Admin' is another! :D

Don't get any ideas now.... :P

Well, I guess I'm a fast poster because I know very little and need to ask a lot. No, there is no name changing going on. I think donkey42 posts a lot because he's a knowledgeable and helpful guy.

We just happen to have the same first name, maybe that's why you might think there's a bit of name changing going on. Good luck with all the school stuff, btw :good:

Thanks for the clarification Dave. The thing that got me is just a few days ago I look and see you both have hundreds of posts and I don't remember seeing you start out. Clearly I've spent too much time away.

i'm not a fast poster either, & i'm NOT that knowledgeable, all i know is what works in Win9x & some DOS, i did think i knew a :swear:ing lot about computers but compared to mega, B, Karan, AT, the list goes on and on and on, yeah, this has turned out to be a popular little thread, but i'm also learning a lot fast, i do try to be helpful cos am a nice bloke! pew-ke lol
 
:P Generally everyone on HWF is patient, friendly and will go out of their way to help. There's been a few (while I've been here) that have caused a bit of a stir but the Admins have dealt with them swiftly and there's been minimal fuss.

HWF is a great place to learn, even if you don't post there's so much to read on here it'd be hard not to learn something new.
 
i'm still learning, a lot fast, i now feel confident about installing things i've only heard of (like SATA, not RAID yet but give me time)
 
I think most people get that, but, generally, once they do it a few times, it's not as bad as it seems...I made much more of a point to try out a lot of stuff. I've used a number of motherboard's from different companies to see what they're like, so I've gotten a fairly good idea of what to expect from certain companies.
There's a lot of stuff to learn on the hardware and software side of things. I know I lean more to the hardware than software/OS's. There are others here that are more attuned to software than I am, so it balances out. I try to keep up on things, but sometimes I feel like I'm falling behind...and then I go read volumes at the Tech Report or Anandtech (I hate THG, except Jim Kirk from 2CPU is the one good thing to happen there).
 
the problem with me i that i have a stupid & selective memory eg. i never remember to take my pills but i also remember the stupidest things like you mentioned james kirk but what is his middle name James T Kirk, get googling B, i actually prefer TNG, and while your googling, michael j fox played which charictor in "The Frightners" (quite a good film, funny)

Technology is moving so fast and it's so easy to get left behind. I try to keep as up to date as much as I can. But I can't afford the luxury of buying a new motherboard and so on, every month! I barely know ECS from ASUS or Elixir from Alaska!

I try to keep as up to date on hardware as I do software. But ultimately i've been left behind on the hardware side. I've only ever built Pentium 3 (and below) based systems, so that's mostly what I know. Ask me about SATA, PCI-E or SLI and i'll stare at you blankly :D
Ask me about IDE, AGP, Slot 1 and Socket 370 and i'll be able to answer everything!

I suppose when I finally get around to building an up to date PC, i'll know a hell of a lot more. I've read a lot about these things, so I know all the theory, but that doesn't count for anything until i've got my hands full with the stuff.

As for Operating Systems, I can tackle almost all Microsoft errors. So I suppose my forte lies here. But i'd like to brush up on modern hardware too

One particular area I knew nothing about til I joined HWF is power supplies. I had no idea that they mattered so much! I found Big B's guide on power supplies invaluable.

My interest is in Linux now though, and i've still got a mountain to climb :)
 
i'm with you mega "IDE, AGP" but i would have to include (from the day of DOS) I / O cards, VESA, EISA and stuff like that (yes i do still live in the past, but i'm trying to update myself but i can't afford new hardware, so i've only got HWF)
 
Well, I found this place whilst building my first computer, which, I am proud to say, is still alive, sitting beside me running F@H. This was my first post. After that I went dormant until about 6 months later, and since then i have been relatively active, however, I haven't posted any in about a month. I will probably regain activity over the summer since I won't have school to deal with. One of the first things I remember learning was what an IRQ was. I think that was courteousy of addis, but I'm not 100% sure. Well, regardless of all the good, I hate you guys for making me my family's IT guy. Thanks a lot, I had to get a shirt that says, "No, I will not fix your computer." on it just to get a break. Jokes aside, this is a great place to learn and I am happy to be able to say that I have helped somebody in some small, trivial way.

BTW, I never did finish off that thread. But I am pleased to report that I sorted it out eventually by buying a USB hub that connects in a 3.5" floppy bay :D

My first post was this one (I think...that's the date I joined, the earliest post I could find and the first thread on my subscribed threads lost). It wasn't asking anything, I joined the forums because I was searching for Computer Forums I think and found this one, it seemed nice so I joined, I'm glad I did :)

I got my digital camera through today - I got it on ebay for £30 - IT Works DVC-305 Digital Camera Specs - DealTime.co.uk it's that one and for £30 it's pretty darn good I must say! I only really got it for snapshots, nothing serious.
