Install Linux through XP?

How do i install Linux Mandriva or Xubuntu from Windows XP when XP doesnt even recognize the file types? I have 2 HDD's. One 300GB SATA where my OS is installed ( C: ), and another 40GB IDE for extra storage ( D: ). I want to install Linux from my running OS... to the 40GB HDD.
How would i do it?

You can't install Linux on a Windows partition - they are different filing systems. I would suggest that you install Linux on your D: drive. Just put your Mandriva or Xubuntu CD/DVD install disk in your DVD/CD drive and boot from it. During the set-up process, you will be asked which drive you want to install the given Linux distro to - choose D: drive. After the install, a OS system menu will come up on screen (this is called a Boot Menu). Simply select which OS you want to boot into - either the given Linux OS or XP.

Ok, this is my question though. How do i boot it up? From BIOS... WINDOWS...?

And for donkey42... what is that VM supposed to do?
 
VM = Virtual Machine, basically a VM is an Operating System that can be run from within another OS,

follow the url's i previously posted and learn about virtualization

BTW: Swiftweseal (my browser on linux) says there is spelling mistakes, so, i'm sorry
 
Ok, everyone... thank you for all the responses.... but im still not getting an answer. I do aplologize if my question is unclear... maybe i didnt state my question clearly enough. I have looked and looked in every forum possible and all i get is..."boot the cd..."... HOW? HOW IS WHERE IM TRYING TO GET AT. i can't do that. Let me explain it clearly again:

I just burned Linux Mandriva on a CD and made it BOOTABLE. Now, to state again... i'm planning to install Linux on a SEPERATE IDE HDD... with no OS in it... NOTHING IN IT. ITS A BLANK. So... with that said, i reset my computer and set my first boot priority to CD so it could load the MANDRIVA setup... but it does nothing and boots up Windows. AND... i can't load the MANDRIVA setup from Windows XP either since there is no .EXE to load. SO my scenario in short is this:

1. CANT LOAD MANDRIVA THROUGH WINDOWS
2. CANT BOOT IT UP.
3. WHAT THE HELL DO I DO?

Sorry if i sound angry at you guys lol im not... im just frustrated. :x:
 
Ok! First of all, you need to download linux (what ever version you Decide on)
it must be an ISO file, then burn to disk. It is self bootable..Next , it will install boot manager so you can boot normal/dual boot.. I hope this helped you.

Now arises several other issues lol...

When Linux loaded, i installed it, but i don't know where it installed to? Meaning after i rebooted back to Windows i didn't see any Linux files anywhere.
Do i need the Linux CD to start the system up?
I also didnt get an option to install Linux on my D: drive.... is there a way to do this?

Well , Linux should of installed a boot manager .... This will give you the option to boot into Windows or Linux. I never used two hard drives before,I just
Partition my hard into two parts..You might have too install a different Boot manager..
 
Ok, so Windows does not recognize Linux partitions (most commonly ext3). Windows disk manager will tell you it is an unknown partition. I do not know of any programs that will let you read an ext3 filesystem from Windows, but it may exist (a Google search my help you a lot here). Funny thing about all of this, while Windows will not recognize Linux partitions Linux will recognize Windows partitions (Kinda shows the superiority of the operating system).
 
Did you pay attention to where it installed? It should have asked you what partition you want to install to.

Which distro did you install? Please give more information.
 
Dont forget that Linux identifies drives differently, you'll find no C: or D:. Your master drive according to your boot order will be /hda whilst your second /hdb etc. However regardless of where you installed the OS a bootloader (normally GRUB) should've been installed too. You can however boot the OS from the CD or mend the bootloader from the CD as well, just boot from the CD and once into the menu look for repair options or an OS boot option.

sorry for answering so late... been busy

I installed Mandriva and i didn't see it hmm... anything i should try besides popping it in and pressing next lol? If not i should give it another try maybe i missed it. But why arent there any linux files on my drive(s)?
 
Sorry to the guys below ill answer to you later when im not in a rush so busy lately! :juggle:
 
basically with linux you (usually) are best creating 4 separate partitions
  • hda1 = /boot = about 100 - 200 Mb = a primary partition obviously set to boot
  • hda5 = /root partition or "/" usually at least 2Gb logical partition
  • hda6 = /home = as big as you want (mine is 15Gb) also logical - your user data is stored here -
  • hda7 = /swap no bigger than 2Gb - similar to Windoze swapfile / pagefile - temporary storage partition
 
Couldn't he just download the iso and burn it to disk because then he can just put in the cd drive and it will boot linux it how i did it (p.s i use Ubuntu so it couldn't be different)
