Im having various probs installing a SATA hard drive on my comp...
and it bears down to running a fresh installation of windows and hitting F6 when it asks if theres any additional hardware i want to add...
...only problem is that nothing happens whe i hit F6!

so it keeps on running, then says "hit F2" for another unrelated purpose... anyway, this works, so why doesnt F6?????

has anyone else had this problem?

It won't happen immediately. You're letting Windows setup know you want to feed some additional drivers for the storage controllers. It'll ask you for a floppy with the drivers on it right before it starts to look for storage devices. This is when you start the actual formatting and installation of the OS.
