installing second hard drive

hi

i'm a newbie when it comes to installing hardware etc and i've already got problems!! i have an asus k8ve motherboard with a maxtor 160gb sata hard drive. i have just got a new western digital caviar 250gb sata hard drive.

when i connect the new hard drive to the motherboard, the system no longer recognises the original hard drive and wont pick up the new one. :doh:

what do i need to do?!? :confused:

are both drives IDE ?
if yes then you need to set the drives as master and slave or C/SEL (cable select)

BTW set the drives by moving the jumper next to the IDE connector, according to a label somewhere on the drive

ok, if the drives have a jumper block, make sure both drives are set to master, and attatch each drive to a separate SATA cable, and both drives should be detected, although you may need to go into BIOS to configure the boot device,

BTW: if your OS is XP, you will need to initalise & format the new drive before you can use the space it provides

As you can see that Dave has explained nearly everything.......I just wants to add a little in it....

SATA drives doesnt comes out with a jumper(they comes out but I think thats for only setting up data speed, if you wants to decrease the speed of SATA2 to 1.5 or something), which means they are all setted up as a master device. The only way to give them priority is through BIOS. You need to Set the Device Priority and under devices HDD priority....

When you computer boots up.....then RightClick MyComputer > Manage > Disk Management > Initialise, create partition and format your drive here.
