Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Vs. E6600...

Hi all,

I am getting a new system and the processor will be between one of these; Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 or Intel Core 2 Duo E6600. The E6400 clocks in @ about 2.13Ghz totaling 4.26Ghz whilst the E6600 clocks a slightly better 2.4Ghz, totaling 4.8Ghz.

I would just like to know what difference in performance (if any) there is between the 2 CPU's. Getting the E6400 will save me around £100 however if the E600 really is better I am willing to pay the extra.

In short, I would just like to know the performance differences between the 2 i.e. when Multitasking, playing high spec'd games etc etc.

The other main components of the computer will be 2GB DDR2 667Mhz RAM and an Nvidia GeForce 8800GTS 320MB OR 640MB.

All help will be greatly appreciated. Also, if it isn't any trouble, could someone please tell me which gfx card is better, the Nvidia GeForce 8800GTS 640MB or 320MB??

Id imagine for the most part the difference will be negligible. I personally wouldn't spend the extra £100, but I dont play games.
If you do play games id get the E6400 and spend the £100 on upgrading the graphics card and ram if performance is your priority.

This is assuming that the E6600 is the same as the E6400 just with a higher clock speed. If the E6600 has an improved core over the E6400 it might be worth looking at.
 
Hey, i just went through that debate myself. In actuality the E6600 has a 4MB L2 on die cache which does give it a nice performance gain compared to the 2MB shared L2 cache you'll find on the E6400 and lower models. I've got an e6600 and my boss has an e6400, really outside of gaming you won't see any difference though as they are both really fast!

This is very dependant on what your priorities are. You want to put your money where you spend your time. If you play games ocasionally then you should go for more prossessor and less gfx card. If you play games alot (or you want your games to run at the best settings and fps') then you should shave on the CPU and put more into your gfx card.

My advice would be this: You play games, obviously, so when you play you want the best experience possible. Get 2gb of good ram the e6400 and the best gfx card you can afford. You wont notice a big difference in everyday computing with the better processor but you will notice a good difference with the better gfx card.
