Hi, i am going on holiday for a week soon, and it's in college time, so i need to be doing work whilst on holiday, were going to be in one of those static caravan things, they dont have a phone socket in the wall, so i was wondering, anyway to get my computer connected to the internet withought needing to connect to a wall socket, for example, say i had a laptop, i was on the beach or somthing :p and i was on the internet, i wouldent have a great big long line going all over the beach to a phone socket, it would be using Wi-Fi or somthing right? well, i need somthing like this for my computer as i gotta take it with me to do work on if i go on holiday, and i will need to recieve work over the net, and withought a phone socker i am going to have a hard time :(

your going to have more than a hard time,

any type of wireless device that i'm aware of, requires you to be within about 50M (open space) of a wireless providing adaptor,
or you could use the net through a WAP mobile phone (probably trough the IRda port on the laptop and mobile) good luck, i think you'll need it

Not really.
Its quite easy to set up a connection with your mobile. I did this with a mate years ago. Not that I can remember how.

You'll be stuck at 28.8kb/s though, or at least that was the limit of his Nokia 8810.

Its your only option really.
 
28.8kbps download speed? or is that like 2.8kbps really?, how do i connect a desktop computer to my mobile, and will it cost through WAP?
 
No, I dont think it was to do with WAP but im not sure. It was something I did once 8-9 years ago. It was 28.8 k bits, thats all the phone could support. My old Thinkpad had 115kb/s support so your phone may be the limiting factor. 2.8k bytes a second :) The fatest connections were only 56k so it wasnt too bad really.
I think we setup a regular dial up connection.
Instead of having a phone cable from the laptop modem to the phone socket in the wall we accessed the mobile phone from the laptop via the Irda.

Somehow we go the laptop dial up connection to access the mobile phone through the Irda, the phone then connected and transferred data back to the laptop.

Looking back, I really dont know how we pulled it off. I remember we had to download a freeware program from downloads.com.

Check your mobile phone! This was a mobile phone from 8 years ago! I dont even have a phone now, for all I know irda is running at 512kb/s now!

115kb/s id the same as ISDN. If my 120mhz thinkpad has this surely a modern mobile might have?
 
I have a Motorola V80, dont know the specs tho, dont know how the comp would connect to that phone, maybe Bluetooth?, i dont have a USB Cable.
 
yeah, you could use bluetooth, or buy a data cable - there cheap enough, about £10 including delivery in most cases
 
well i've no idea how to set it up, i've never even used bluetooth or a WAP phone, so i don't have a clue, sorry, i'm just an ideas man,

I think connection speed is still better than a daillup connection. Btw, make sure to ask for internet usage price from your Mobile Service Provider. I dont want you to do the same mistake which I did couple of days ago. I downloaded Nokia Album from their website. It was only 600 something kb of file and I end up losing my 18$ in it. Which sucked!
 
Wap is different from HTML enabled browsing on mobile devices.

I remember when I got my first phone with a HTML enabled browser I spent ages downloading themes / ringtones etc, ended up costing me like £50 extra for that month (on top of a £30 a month bill). Needless to say my parents weren't too happy as they payed the bill (it was a few years ago - before I could have the contract in my name)

If you had a laptop you could get a Data Card - it uses the mobile phone network and allows you to connect to the internet but the prices are extremely high, something like £35 a month for a 250MB Download limit usually.
