IR headphones need to match?

Do IR headphones use a common protocol or do the headphones have to be matched with the transmitter? I have a transmitter but no headphones so could I just go out and buy some headphones for it and expect them to work? I really don't know much about these things.

in theory yes, but as with everything when theory meets practice, all hell breaks loose.
