Is SATA now the way to go?

Big Geek
Thinking of doing a build for a friend. I'm inclined to think that I should be looking at SATA connected devices, as opposed to IDE (ATA), as they seem to be the way forward now - or so I understand.

Am I likely to pay more for a motherboard geared more to SATA and the accompanying HDDs, optical devices and PSU?

Thanks,

David

yes, but , personally I'd get a SATA2 HDD & IDE CD / DVDs as a new mobo will probably only have 1 IDE channel, also media drives can only access data slowly - so, putting a CD / DVD on a SATA port would be a waste of a SATA port, you may as well use the single IDE channel

no, specifications rise as prises go down, so, if 2 years ago you spent £2000 on appropriate components to build an entire system from, and spent £2000 today the system you would get would have all the extra bangs & whistles of a new system but it's still £2000

hope that helps

Yes, it does. Thanks!

Just be careful of how many SATA or IDE connections the motherboard has. I'd say definitely get a SATA HDD, but i might stay away from the SATA optical drives. Some of them seem to have some issues being recognized.
