yeah, um I've installed iTunes 7, which has the video library enabled. Its on my Windows XP computer. Yes, I am trying to get my dvd on to the PC hardrive and/or on to iTunes on my PC, then on to my iPod (the 60 GB one). I hope thats all the info you need, if not let me know. Thanks for the help.

The answer I am afraid is not that straightforward as I am not sure what video strams the ipod can handle. To rip (the process of transferring your vido files or stream to your computer) a DVD (disk), you need to copy the entire movie or at least the main part of it (excluding any extras that might be available on the actual disk) to your PC. Then you will need to convert the files you have copied (ripped) to a file type which your iPod can play. There are a few file type (also can be refered to as containers) - mainly AVI, MPEG and WMV.
As I know this sounds a bit complicated, I will make a short list of steps you need to take:
1. Make sure your PC has a DVD-ROM drive. I know this sounds obvious but no harm in checking.
2. Enough space on your hard drive (at least 2-3GB for the main movie. I would recomend 5-6GB, better safe than sorry....)
3. The more power you have in your rig the better (see the word of advice at the bottom).
4. Software - this is the tricky bit. There are an abundance of programs out there and I am sure many forum dwellers will vouch for some of them and dis others. So I can only speak from my experience. Here goes:
Ripping - DVDDecrypter (free). Back up any part of the disk you choose.
Converting - there are a large number of methods and programs. I found DR. DIVX the most straight forward way. Unfortunately you have to pay for it.

Here is a list of tools to convert to AVI (DIVX or XVID). For other formats use the same site which is the Mecca for everything DVD and digital Video. I would strongly recommend a visit anyway. The amount of knowledge is staggering!
A word of advice: Video processing is a bitch on resources and can take a long time. Be patient! Because of licensing, some of the best programs are payware and the free methods can be lengthy and tiresome.

My Bad - I said originaly 5-6GB. This is no good for backing up a large DVD which can take upto 8-9GB (DVD9). You probably need a space of at least 10-15GB if you wish to back-up the whole DVD.
