Lightscribe DVD R/W

My HP PC is less that a year old. I normally use my Sony DVD R/W connected by USB to do all my burning. It works fine. My intentions where to use the Sony to burn until it died, and then use the one in the tower. But it was the Lightscribe that quit the other day, and without any warning. I haven't used it that much. I called HP and we went through the motions of a tech reading from a card. I knew as much as they did and more.

The drive is recognized and the drivers are there. Says it's working properly. Icon is there, but when I double click it says there is nothing to read. If I insert any media, all programs say the drive is not ready. I've exasperated everything I know.

HP says before they would replace the drive, I would need to do a full system restore. That would suck because everything thing else works just fine, and I just got the system to where I like it. Running XP 2 media center.

The other DVD ROM drive in the tower works fine. Everything except the Lightscribe which is the master.

Could it be software related?

The newest software I installed is Exact Audio Copy. Ever since I downloaded and used this software the drive went capoot. I thinking it was coincidental and not the software.

Please Help.

I also had issues with EAC. Not like yours but it is worth a try....

Try installing a fresh ASPI layer (what ever that means).
But! Do not use Adaptec's own. Go here to get ForceASPI. Follow the instructions properly as you will need to kill and clear the old layer.

i thought you only needed to install ASPI on Win9x :confused:[ot]he's using XP Media[/ot]BTW: try the drive in another computer, if removing spyware & viruses doesn't work

You are right. WinXP and 2000 do not use the layer. However, it does not hurt to install and could add further software/hardware computability.

You could read further in the page I have linked. :cool:

true, but ASPI is built into nero (for example) a lot of CD / DVD burning software use nero's burning engine / ASPI layer[ot]i could be wrong but i didn't think Lightscribe used ASPI too, am i wrong, as usual[/ot]
 
Ran the scan and found nothing. I don't understand how the ASPI could have made the drive disfunction. The DVD ROM drive in the tower works fine as does the Sony SCSI drive.

I'm almost ready to do a system restore. :smash:

me neither, ASPI is used when burning CD / DVD's, so it won't affect a ROM drive

well it couldn't hurt to try it, just create a new restore point before doing a system restore (so you can easily get back to where you were)
