Maximum system memory, theoretical or actual?

I have an old IBM I'm working on and it supposedly can only hold 128mb of ram. Now when I put in a 32 stick and 128 stick, it only used 64mb, but i went into the bios and it came up with an error saying it had 160mb of ram. It obviously recognizes all the RAM, but it won't let the computer use it. Can this be fixed?
 
That would depend on the chipset used in the motherboard. Some chipsets only were designed for 128MB, but considering that was close to ten years ago, 128MB back then is like having a 4GB maximum now. The BIOS may very well recongize the amount, but just because it's recognized doesn't mean you'll be able to use it. If it's a chipset limitation, then there's really nothing you can do about it. However, if it happens to be a glitch in the BIOS, then you might want to see if there's a BIOS update for the motherboard.
 
Alright, thanks for the info.

After looking around some more I find that I'm really not accessing my BIOS or CMOS aparently and I need a diskette. What's the best way to find this diskette? I've been yahoo!ing for a while to no avail.
 
The only reason you would need a floppy is if you wanted to flash your BIOS. What manufacturer is your BIOS?
