Memory for Dell Dimension 8400?

I have a Dell Dimension 8400 Pentium 3.0 ghz with HT. I opened the case and pulled a 256 mb ram and it states "Samsung 256mb 1Rx8 PC2 - 3200U - 333 - 10 - 41". I have two of these for a total of 512 but I'd like a total of 1gb. What type of ram should I get? Dell's site states that it takes this: "512 MB Dual channel DDR2-400MHz SDRAM standard, upgradable to 4 GB1 DDR2-400MHz or 533MHz SDRAM
4 DIMM slots" but I think my machine is older than the one they have listed. I'm totally confused. Is my Samsung ram 400mhz and DDR2? or is it 333mhz? What type of ram would I get to make it 1gb? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

You would be looking for some PC2-3200 non-ECC (DDR2-400) memory. You have 2 banks with 2 slots in each bank (totalling 4 slots).

Could you please provide us with your budget and the basis of what you use your PC for?

Your current RAM is PC2-3200 (DDR2-400). The numbers after that are just part numbers or ID numbers.

At any rate, Dell RAM sticks aren't that great of performers. I can only speak in terms of their XPS desktops. I almost bought one until I decided to build. If you want a good memory stick, try retailers like Corsair, OCZ (obvious bias, but they are fast).
