motherboard is alive?

my motherboard (K8N Neo2 Platinum) is really freaking me out.
It is recieving power from the power supply, but instead of waiting until the power jumper is hooked up and the power button is pressed it shows signs of life.
All my fans come on and the power button doesn't work on my case to shut it off or to power up the rest of the system.
There is no display and the hdd or cdrom doesn't have power.
Does my board have a mind of its own or is something seriously wrong?

120G WesternDigital HDD
nVIDIA GeForce FX 5500
Vantec Stealth ATX 520W
 
Seems just like a faulty mobo. Try booting outside your case on a non conductive surface and if that doesn't help then I'd say your mobo is damaged.
 
this is actually the second motherboard that i recieved.
first one didn't have any power at all.
this one is the exact opposite i guess?
kind of ironic getting two faulty motherboards on opposite ends of the power spectrum.
oh well.
MSI here i come...AGAIN.

would you happen to be able to recommend a AMD 64 motherboard?
 
Yeah, I'm totally for Gigabyte, the K8 series is very reliable in my opinion, I've read articles about you mobo and they had problems of their own, apparently they couldn't get it running stable for any extended period of time. ASUS makes some good quality boards too.
 
Thats not so strange. I've had lots of MSI boards and most of them do that weird stuff. As soon as you plug them, the fans spin for like 2 seconds and then turn off again. It freaked me out the first time :sick: , but then I accepted it as something normal from MSI. After they're done with this ritual, they work fine.
 
If you're willing to go to a PCI Express video card, I'd seriously check out DFI's LanPartyUT NF4 Ultra-D. One of the best motherboards I've ever worked with.

Well I have this exact same mobo and have no problems with it, and the Neo2 Platinum is anything but a cheap board if you look at the features and if you look at performance (basically everything).

But anyway, the Asus K8N-E Deluxe is also a good one. Of course Asus isn't the best performer (both stock and oced), but it's certainly reliable.

EDIT: That's if you stick to an agp solution, if not, then the DFI seems to be one of the best you can get.
 
And as always, try the mobo and daughter boards outside the casing first before putting them all in. This should be a standard way of assembling your own PC. Saves you a lot of headaches later on..
