Mpeg4 to DVD

Hi all, I didn't know where to put this topic.

How can I recode an Mpeg4 file so I can burn it to DVD and it will play on a DVD player.

I have tried burning it as it is and it wont play, i've tried several pieces of recoding software but they all come up with errors. It plays in real player and Quick time so I must have the right codec installed.
Any ideas?
 
the way i did it was to use nero to create a VCD (Video CD) or use nero to create an SVCD (Super Video CD)

if i remember correctly i think nero can just write media to a disk and create a virtual VCD out of a DVDr or RW
 
Thanks for the suggestion. I have just tried it. However isn't VCD a cd? I need to put it onto a DVD as its too big to put on a cd. It wont let me go any further as it says there isn't enough space. Please help :(
 
which OS are you using (presumably XP), to advise you further, i would prefer to be using the same OS, to ensure i advise you correctly

As stated, it would be helpful if you could advise as to the operating system you are using. However, let's for the moment, assume you are using one of the later versions of Windows or even XP itself. So - try downloading this piece of freeware:

Nero Recode

When the program is installed, you should be able to select your mpeg4 file from the menu and burn it to a DVD. The program should do all the required file recoding and set the compression rates automatically for you. It's a good little utility and easy to use. In any event, if it does not work - just uninstall it! Good luck.

Firstly i'm using XP professional, sp2.

I just downloaded the nero recode but i realised that I already have it in with my Nero bundle-ultra edition. I tried nero recode to begin with, all this does is convert it to Mpeg4/Nero digital. It doesn't give you the option to convert it back. And also with the DVD recoding all that does is compress an existing DVD to fit on a standard 4.7GB DVD.

I think what I need and maybe I was a little confusing earlier, is a peice of software that will convert Mpeg4 so I can burn it to DVD (and it will then play on a DVD player). Or something to change it to AVI (or something) so I can burn it as a VCD. I'd prefer the DVD option though so I can fit it all to one disk.
 
I'm still having no luck. I left Nero running last night and converted it to the Nero digital to see what it would do. It burnt to the DVD but it still came up bad disk when I tried it in my DVD player this morning.
Please clever people! Help me!:crying:
 
Sorry to hear you're stilling having problems. I've done some researching on the Net to try to find a solution. There seems to many utilities that claim to do what is required in order for you to be able to convert your mpeg4 file so that it can then be burned to DVD and the disk will then be able to be played in a home DVD player.

It is, of course, just finding one that will actually work that is the problem! The following might be worth checking out for converting unprotected mpeg4 files. In any event, stick with it. I'm sure someone will come up with a solution for you.

I think what you need is dvd authoring software, This type of software lets you create all the menus and crap that is necessary to burn a disc. I personally use Ulead's dvd authoring program. A friend of mine introduced me to it a while back when i had the same issue. This program is pretty good. You can customize the button layout on the menu screen and add music to each page of the menu. It also lets you chop up the videos into chapters. So if you don't have enough room on a dvd for one movie, you can make it into two chapters. pretty neat. DVD authoring and burning software: Ulead DVD MovieFactory - Home. I had used the movie factory. Unfortunately i had to give it back to my friend and never bought my own copy. I'll keep an eye out for free dvd authoring programs.
 
Betsy - a friend of mine has posted the following comments to me for your information:

"For converting AVI to DVDs you can try TMPGEnc Plus and DVD author (commercial tools with free trial) or use Avi2DVD (freeware). You can use AviSynth to frameserve MP4 to HCEnc which is a great MPEG-2 encoder too"

I don't have time to search out links to these programs at the moment, but you can Google them. They might be worth a try, as my friend is pretty good with digital video stuff (or so he says!).
 
Right, there are some great ideas there. I will give it a go when I get home from work and let you know. Has anyone heard of DVD santa, a friend of mine has suggested that.
 
are you sure the DVD player will play DVDr's ?
how old is thr DVD player ?

the DVD player may only play bought DVD's, try playing another DVDr and see if it works,
also post the make and model of the DVD player please

Edit: i meant for you to try another DVDr video (in bold)

Edit: not herd much about DVD Santa, but i'm not sure that it will play nicely with mpeg's (not sure it will work with Mpeg's) it only says it works with .avi's on their website, but i could be wrong
 
Hi guys. Thanks for all of the help, I tried most of the suggestions and I couldn't get anything to work. DVDsanta came the closest, it only recoded the sound though.
I thought nothing was going to work until I tried one of the links at the top of the page, AVS video tools! Worked great although I did have to settle for comverting to AVI, still its watchable but on two disks!
