Hello everybody

I ve been visiting these forums for some time now, but this is my first post...
As you guessed from the title, this is another "please help me with my build" post and I really need your expertise here, because I dont know that much about hardware

So, this is what i'm thinking for a + or - 2000Eur budget:

Case: Antec P180 (dont know if everything fits here...)
CPU: Intel E6600
MotherBoard: Asus P5B deluxe
PSU: Hiper Type R 580W
GPU: BFG Geforce 8800 Gts
RAM: Corsair PC XMS2 TwinX 2x1024 DDR2
HD: Seagate Barracuda 320Gb
LCD: Asus PW201 or Asus MW221U
SOUND: have no idea

Oh, forgot, Im an architect, so it would be used for a lot of photoshop,
3dsMax and such work, but I also happen to like Oblivion, and I cant wait forever for the new R600 (when do they get out?) so i dont know about that GPU...:)
Anyway, can you give me some advice on this build?

That looks like an excellent setup. Right now the 8800GTS is only bested by nVidia's own GeForce 8800GTX. I don't believe any specific date has been hammered out yet for R600.

Sound...well, if your gaming, then Creative's X-Fi series or older Audigy 2 ZX would be your best bet. If it's going to involve music, then M-Audio or Terratec would be more up your alley.

I don't know how big of files you have, but you may want to have a separate hard drive (possibly external if you need them to take to work) for your work. I'd definitely invest in a DVD-RW drive (I prefer Pioneer myself) for an optical drive as CD-ROM's aren't that much cheaper (maybe $10 on average).

Again, it looks like a really good setup, so there's not much to recommend.
 
You might want to look at Western Digital's new 74GB Raptor drives and use your Seagate as a separate storage drive if you want really good performance.

Do you guys know anything about the 8800 GTS beying bad with 3d studio max or autocad? BEcause I dont want to get a dedicated 3d GPU.

Not that I've heard. It's not geared toward professional applications like the Quadro's are, but I haven't run across anything to indicate an issue. If there was, it'd likely be a software issue (either the program itself or a driver problem), not the silicon itself.

Coincidence, my father is an architect and he uses a 8800GTS.
He says it handles the rendering superbly, and I know he uses all thoose 3D imagry programs, don't ask me what, but Im 100% sure autoCAD is one of them.

Nice system, enjoy.
 
I wonder when we'll see the G80 (GeForce 8800 codename) derivatives of the Quadro family...
 
Do you really NEED a card that powerfull for things like Auto CAD and apps like Cinema 4D? i would of thought i would be able to do good stuff with those programs even with my old X800XT PE?
 
He wants to play oblivion so he does need a nice gaming gpu that can handle professional apps
 
Well Oblivion is not that demanding i dont think, with my X800XT PE i can play on all max settings, sure i get abit of lag but it aint a showstopper.
 
Hehe yea it surprises me, i run it at 1440x900 res, all max settings, but no HDR because its not supported by my card, I dont use AA or AF though, abit too much lag, allthough if i lower the res to 1280x 1024 ot 1152x800 or something like that then i can have AA or AF and it runs like a treat :D
 
Well, yes I (eventually when i have some time) want to play oblivion...my problem was if the "gaming" card would be a big setback in relation to something like a quaddro or firegl wich i´m not the least familiarized with. The GTS is the one i can afford right now :) although i already saw a thread here about how the new R600 is much much better...I guess thats the way it allways is!
 
I've read that there can be some problems with fitting other PSU's than Antec's own. The NEO HE ATX 500w will fit with out you have to alter the case.
