NEC DVD RW3500 problem

I have had an NEC DVD RW 3500 drive in my PC for ~10 months and had no problems until now. It won't play CDs of any sort but, it will play DVDs. It won't record on anything. I have been using Ulead videostudio7 to make DVD movies and also Nero6 for most other recording jobs. All working fine until yesterday. PC supplier gone bust and NEC support useless. Does anyone have a list of things I could try. Have downloaded latest firmware but not installed yet. Is this worth a go?

yes, I would try the latest firmware. Do you get any error messages when trying to burn or play cds?

Thanks for the cleaning advice. If it doesn't work for this drive I can always use it for all my other laser toys.

Did you open up your computer to check if anything got unplugged? Or you could take another cd drive of any kind that you know works and plug it in with all the same plugs that you used to operate your dvd rw drive. Its possible it could be one of the plugs gone bad. Other wise it sounds like its dead. If you got a warranty you might just want to return it and get another.

I have checked plugs and don't appear to be any problems. Have a second drive and have swapped power plugs with no difference. I think I am resigned to spending birthday money on new drive!!
