Need Major Help With Overheating

I have a Toshiba Satellite l305-s5899. It hasn't done an emergency shutdown from excess heat (yet), but I really do not want it to get to that point. This thing is my main computer. Anyhow, im pretty sure its getting hot because of dust, but heres the catch. Im pretty savvy with taking apart desktop computers, but not laptops. Id like to clean this thing out as soon as possible, im just afraid to screw something up by just jumping in, taking out screws and such. I need to get to the fan and heatsink. Could anyone tell me if it would be too risky? Am i gonna have to take out alot of parts to get to the fan and heatsink?
 
I've never done it myself so can only assume its pretty tricky! maybe use a "air duster can"?
 
Well i considered that at first, but really it would just blow the dust everywhere into the inside. I was thinking if i could get to the fan and heatsink, i could use a Q-tip to thoroughly clean every speck of dust out.

Hi Dylan,

You do not need to take off the complete cover of the laptop. Only the little cover which is above the main board. Turn your laptop around and unscrew the screws of this cover. Make sure you remove all the screws from the holes before lifting the lit. Make sure you remember which screw is located where.

Usually a laptop overheats when using it onto your lap or because their is too little space between the table and the bottom. Put a wooden plate under the laptop.

Well, the thing is, it doesnt have an access cover for the mainboard. It only has the bottom half of the case. Someone told me you have to take the WHOLE thing apart, and i really do not want to have to do that.

Hello Dylan,

Last week I fixed a Toshiba Satellite with the same symptons as yours. For some reason the processor always ran at 100%. In this case the cause was "MalwareBytes". On that laptop MalwareBytes was installed and for some reason the program became currupt. This caused the laptop running constantly on 100% and shutted down after a while. I had another laptop where "Norman" anti virus was installed with exactly the same symptons.

Based on your information, dust will not be the problem. If I where you, I should remove all your anti virus and anti spam software leaving your computer unprotected so you have to disconnect from the internet immediatelly after the removal. Then still be completely offline, restart your laptop and see if everything is normal.

When everything is normal just install your anti virus and anti spam software again.

AVG, Norman uses much more processor power than Avast. MalwareBytes is very good.

I also advise to install Advanced System Care or any other repair program onto your laptop and check it regularly. That also should prevent many problems from occuring.

All the software I mentioned here, have free unpaid versions. I only mentioned them because I have good experiences with them on my own laptop. From time to time, things go wrong and has to be fixed.

If you want to clean your laptop, just use a vacuum cleaner on the in and outlet holes of the ventilation. Don't set the vacuum cleaner to maximum. That also should remove the dust. When you are not experienced our in doubt, don't remove the cover at all.

Ive already checked the CPU. Neither of the cores runs at maximum all the time. Im sure its dust because ive actually heard the fan grinding against dust and dust like poofing out of the vent. Sometimes the fan wont spin because of the dust.

What would maintenance software have to do with a physical issue? It seems as much of a help as installing a web browser.
